Best war films

Perhaps not the among the best but two that I really enjoyed watching are The Captain and Come and See. Really horrific, visceral depiction of war and the effects it has on people.

Dambusters

The Twelfth Man (I caught hypothermia just watching it)

Saving Private Ryan

Not a film but Band of Brothers is by far my favourite war thingy.
Saving private Ryan is up there for the historical accuracy of the opening scene and much of the film in terms of getting things about right. However it's let down by the plot to an extent.

Band of brothers was the same production team and Tom Hanks involved and it was very much the same quality of accuracy. And a better plot as it followed a real life story of a company where many survived the war so lots of 1st hand accounts and documentation of what happened.

War films don't really need a plot.

A great example is the heroes of telemark. It's not a great film. But the story is bonkers. That's 1 film I'd like to see remaid.

I like Telemark as well, usually on over Christmas. Based on true story but far from accurate apparently.
Operation Crossbow
Eagle Has Landed

No film but very few TV series could ever match The World at War. One of the very few DVD collections I’ve kept (Sopranos being the other).

I've been to the Vemork plant in Rjukan during winter when I was over in Norway ice climbing a few years back. How the team managed to make those mission a success in such harsh conditions can never be overstated.

The Train
The Guns of Navarone
A Bridge too Far
Schindler’s List
Cross of Iron
Platoon

Absolute stinker

The battle of the bulge, it could have been a very good film if it wasn’t for a complete disregard to accuracy for pretty much every bit of equipment shown.
