absolutley fantastic. i really had a moment there. thanks for that.

Re: BIG....................mind blowingly BIG....

Boggles your mind a wee bit, a bit like when you think about being dead - not existing forever. You never stop not existing, isn't that a fun thought?

the sun is a yellow dwarf. yellow dwarves have a life span of around 10b years. the sun is already 5b years old. in 5 billion years time, it will exhaust it's supply of hydrogen (which it fuses into helium), the core will collapse. at this stage, it starts to fuse helium into carbon, which releases far more energy, and the sun will expand to become a red giant, cooler at the surface, slightly smaller in mass but expanded in size to occupy a space as large as the earth's orbit, two hundred times it's current size.

the earth will have been fried long before this happens, but will eventually be consumed by the sun. after another billion years, the helium will be exhausted, the core will collapse again, the sun will contract and the outer layers explode to become a 'planetary nebula' around the remaining core, a 'white dwarf' with the mass of the sun but the size of the earth. this will burn extremely hot initially but eventually fade into a 'black dwarf'. don't ask me what these look like. they don't exist yet. the universe is too young.

A very good yet brief explanation of our sun. Black Dwarve's though might exist however finding them is next to impossible seeing as they emit little to no radiation and just like other planets we would have to find a way of detecting them other than simply looking for them. Granted that the universe is still young relatively speaking, however the possibility for a black dwarf star is still rather high.

Now as for that Canis Majoris star it is debated as to whether or not it is the scale depicted in the .gif. It has been put forth that it could simply be a regular Red Hypergiant (or something of that nature) or an extremely large Red Supergiant. The thing about Canis Maroris though is its luminosity, thats what makes everyone believe that it is so gigantic. However when it comes to the luminosity there is so much that can be wrong particularily with this star. The light could be refracted off the nebula increasing it's luminosity or it could also be from the star itself that part is generally unknown but there are many theories.

The blackhole from that star though will more than likely be the largest one of its kind except for possibly the one at the center of the galaxy.... and thats even still just a theory but a rather firm one.
