Bike rides in Manchester

Rochdale Canal goes through Ancoats, Miles Platting, Newton Heath and Failsworth. Pretty much parallel with Oldham Road and right past the Kippax Pub
Ah I go running along there, didn't know it was the Rochdale canal. It goes from town past COMS, you meet some 'interesting' people on there in the East Manchester section.

I met some interesting geese there when I was riding back towards the city centre from COMS after buying my semi tickets. When I had to stop because the towpath was blocked by fences surrounding repair work two geese attacked me and left me with a lovely bruise on my arm.

Just got my bike fixed, and was trying to think of some nice bike rides around the area.

I'm planning to do the one that goes on that disused railway line from Debdale to around Chorlton way [and possibly further?] tomorrow, but can't think of too many more.

Any ideas?

Viva.....you are a very good lad, most welcome, and operate underneath and over the radar, but bathe him and bring him to me. Sergio will cause so much havoc that your Raleigh Chopper will be wedged between your cheeks so quickly that you won`t know what`s hit you. Dodgy bikes will be the least of your worries. If you are looking for a bike to ride, ask Natasha Giggs. Everyone has her number. Even Phil Neville.

The canal that passes COMS is the Ashton Canal. The Rochdale Canal is not far away but is further north, close to Oldham Road.

It's 32/33 miles from Castlefield to Sowerby Bridge. About the 20 mile mark you hit the highest point at a place amazingly called Summit. Last time I carried on past this point, the cycle back to Summit nearly finished me off!

Be aware that there used to be a floating towpath through a narrow tunnel under the M62. Last time I went up there it had gone so you have to take a bit of a road detour to get to the other side of the motorway

Up the ashton canal to portland basin and do a right under the stone bridge gets you on to the peak Forrest canal...straight thru to whalley bridge...there's a chippy there or if your still half lively you can smash the appropriately named ' long hill' and drop into Buxton...3mile to the other side you have the recently opened http://www.peakblackwellcyclehire.com/gallery.html where you can cruise down to Bakewell.

That's called Fallowfield loop and the one I was going to suggest. I discovered that at weekend when out running.
Bashed this one out again tonight; lovely route. Really easy going, but pleasant on an evening like this.

Still thinking of doing the Rochdale Canal sometime soon.

If you have access to a car, get up to Delamere Forest. Awesome for biking, (if its a mountain bike you have).
I don't drive, but I've got the train to Delamere from Manchester/Stockport a few times. I've got a road bike, but the last time I went there you could rent mountain bikes for a reasonable price.

I also fell of a mountain bike on one of the stone paths there while I had my top off; going head first over the bars and sliding on my bare chest for a good few feet. Most painful thing I've ever felt.

Urggh, Christ! That big stone hill that goes to the top up to where the pilons are etc, me and my mate often talk about how it's probably best to die than fall on there whilst belting it at top speed. Must reach 30mph plus on the way down that. We don't wear head gear so in the end I stopped doing it. Watching my mate come trundlng down at top speed is fucking scary as fuck. I come down the dirt tracks now, much more fun anyway than going in a straight line.

The ride I do quite frequently is along the Rochdale Canal. Never got as far as the full distance to Sowerby Bridge, but got as far as Hebden Bridge which is about 15 miles fro
Mills Hill. Apart from a ropey bit through Castleton and Rochdale its a really good ride. One day I will do the full route from Castlefield

Never gone past Hollingworth Lake on that, usually get on at the Waterside at Holly Lake after coming off the moors and get off either at Chaddy Park, the cutting at Firwood or the Boat, Got down as far as Morrisons in Newton Heath but was put off by the number of scallies to lonely old me, thought I was gonna end up bikeless n swimming.
