Birmingham

Yeah not great mate! Certain areas are ok but others are a complete mess. As said city centre seems fine but it's more highly density populated residential areas which are bad (as you'd expect). Also bit of a wounder watching council tax jump 7.5% to have to spend any spare time you can queuing to get into the tip!

Issue is, I don't see any sign of it ending any time soon. Outer suburbs aren't too bad. Inner cities are a genuine health risk to those living there, but then again, a lot that do unfortunately contribute to this mess.
Commercial business usually pays private companies. Residential is different. Round here anyway.

Bloody auto correct! I meant Curzon Street - yep around Millenium Point. I was pleased to see The Woodman is still open. Decent (yes really) pint of Ansells Mild back in the day
"Ansell's for the Men of the Midlands" was absolute cold piss.
Luckily Manchester had Tetley's in their Ind Coope pubs.
Growing up in South Wales, unfortunately we had Ansell's and it was as bad as Watneys, Courage & Allbright.
Some great Black Country beers though e.g. Bathams...

Bathams is a great pint, as is Holden’s.

What makes you think it's more violent than say Manchester or Liverpool? I always thought all 3 cities were quite similar to be honest in terms of crime rates/poverty etc. I haven't been to either city in a while (well the parts outside the city centre which have generally improved) so maybe some suburbs are better than they used to be?
Birmingham is ahead of both Liverpool and Manchester in the crime index as well as the statistics for firearm and non-firearm related violent crime.

Birmingham has a long standing culture of gun production which partly explains the difference I’d say. Certainly guns are more readily available in and around the city than anywhere outside London.

Anyone I’ve discussed the subject with at WMP thinks Birmingham is more violent than anywhere else, although you might very well get a similar refrain if you spoke to someone at GMP I suppose.

Upon reflection, I don’t think it’s miles worse btw, just discernibly so - so I’ll correct what I previously said about it being ‘far’ worse. It’s worse.

Yeah I wasn't necessarily disputing what you were saying I was just curious as assume you've lived in both places. I always thought Brum/Manchester were similar in a lot of ways, big rough cities in large parts with a sprinkle of some nicer suburbs in the south of the cities, then on the outskirts Altringham/Solihull being similar etc.

Maybe Brum's deteriorated more than the others I don't know, living here some places feel like they've got better and some a lot worse.

"DAY THIRTY FOUR IN THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE BIRMINGHAM"
Captain Mainwaring cancels leave for Private Frazer, Lance Corporal Jones, Private Godfrey,
Sergeant Wilson and that twit Private Pike with immediate effect...

West Yorkshire with 626 incidents over the past year is the worst for gun crime outside London, big increases over the last few years in Bradford, Batley, Keighley (of all places) and the surrounding areas.

By comparison Birmingham had 576 and Manchester 494.

My daughter lives in Moseley. Seems quite respectable.

I moved out of Birmingham in 1999 & moved away from the West Midlands altogether in 2007.
I have most of my siblings & their families still living in Birmingham & we get together regularly, but we tend to just drive there & back for each visit.
We decided to make a weekend of it in Dec 2024 & stayed at a hotel near the city centre.
I was shocked at just how rough & filthy it had gotten, it didn’t feel safe when we were out at night & the suburbs are not much better.
I am so glad not to live there anymore.

Having tried both and visited both breweries I found them to be too sweet, not hoppy at all. Bathams mild was excelllent though
Actually went on a stag do a few years ago round various Black Country breweries/brewery taps and went to both of them, alongside Craddock’s, Sadler’s and a couple of others.

so if the council are correct its 17 people losing £8k pa of a cost of £136k pa in total. Same councillors voted a pay rise for themselves in February at a total cost to the council or £110k pa. And at the same time added a further £250 per burial at a council cemetary - this whole thing has been hopelessly mismanaged

I've got loads of rubbish that needs dumping somewhere...I'll take a trip down to Birmingham with it all later.
Thank you, Birmingham...our 2nd city ;)

There's a new pub just opened in Stafford that has Holden's Golden Glow on as a regular beer. Saves me having to travel to the Great Western in Wolverhampton!
Unfortunately, Bathams seems quite rare outside the Black Country.
The Great Western is great boozer. Actually walked along the canal from Birmingham to Wolverhampton during Covid in the summer of 2020 when the pubs were open and had a couple of pints of Holden’s Bitter in there at the end before getting the train back. Tasted amazing.

Bathams are quite an insular company with pretty low horizons I’d say. Know people who’ve dealt with both and they are both a bit weird to do business with I was told, especially Holden’s!

On the 2nd day of getting a job in Birmingham back in 2002, my boss took me to The Great Western for a "meeting" with one of our suppliers. Needless to say, it just ended up being an all day piss-up!
