The accent is indeed a crime against the English language, and it's hard to reconcile with the bard coming from 20 odd miles away.
Anyone speaking Brummie always sounds to me like someone who has recently suffered a colossal trauma to the head.
The folk seem friendly enough though.

I like Birmingham and I like Brummies. The accent doesn't bother me either. There's worse ones out there: Aberdeen, Mansfield, Essex, Hereford, Bolton all spring to mind.

Manchester is better, but Birmingham's alright.

Despite my ex being from the black country I never really got to know Birmingham so I can't really pass judgement.
