I’ve told this story before, and I read it in @Gary James' excellent biography of Joe Mercer.

In the time between Sir Joe and Big Mal being appointed and the start of the season, Crerand bet Malcom that City would never again have a crowd of over 30 000, I think it was.

Crerand lost the bet within two games.

Yes. Malcolm Allison told me the story about the bet - it was at Utd’s title winning banquet in 1965 and Allison and Mercer had listened to lots of Utd officials laugh at City. That night Allison snapped and told Matt Busby’s son that his dad had a twenty year start but that Allison’s& Mercer would pass him in three! Not quite right but after 1968 Utd didn’t win a trophy for years and dropped to Div 2 while City found major success at home and in Europe.

The bet with Crerand…. City’s FAC game with Everton attracted a crowd of over 63,000 which was bigger than any domestic attendance at OT that season.

Ogden is bordering on unwatchable whenever on ESPNFC.

If you had never watched football and had to listen to him talk about City recently, you would think we are the most finished club in Europe, on the brink of extinction where the entire club is a crisis hotbed.
