Blair - £4m + to the Royal British Legion

Been listening to a phone in on Radio 5 about Tony Blair giving all the proceeds from his book to the Royal British Legion. I think the sum mentioned was about £4m, but I'm not sure on that as I came to the discussion late.

Some woman phoned up to say she was going to rescind her membership of the RBL because of this. Others have phoned to say the usual stuff about blood on his hands, and that this money makes no difference.

Now I am absolutely not a fan of Blair, in actual fact if he comes on the telly I will switch it over, I find the man odious. However, this isn't such a bad gesture from him. I know he has a few bob, but this is quite a large chunk of money even for him.

Does anyone else feel he is trying to cleanse his soul with a 30 (or 4m) pieces of silver, or is this just a really nice gesture?

i could care less about blair whether he want to clean his sole or not. the money will be of great use to service men and there family`s

The guy will quickly find out that no amount of money will buy him peace of mind and allow him to get a good night's rest.

£4m doesn't bring back the soldiers who have lost their lives, the soldiers who have been horrifically disabled or the 1,000,000+ civillians who have been killed for no reason other than their place of birth.

He makes me sick. I know that's a cliche but the very name of Tony Blair makes me feel like my stomach is jumping.

As if it wasn't bad enough...it's all for nothing. There isn't even a cause to which a grieving family can point to and say "my son died for that...and that makes it a little less painful".

The man should be at The Hague.

Where've you got the 1,000,000 plus from?

In 2006 a report in The Lancet discovered that over 650,000 Iraqi's had been killed since the beginning of the war in 2003.

Another four years have passed since then, and when we consider that 2006 was a year in which the highest number of civillian deaths were recorded - and 2007 had comparable levels - there is no doubt that the figure is now past the 1,000,000 mark.

Sounds like a reasonable estimate to me.

Blair should be facing a war crimes charge as far as Im concerned.

Does that include the millions of iraqis sadam murdered, or the campaign f genocide he waged against the kurds?

You mean with the stuff we sold him?

Mike - can you explain which "millions" Saddam murdered? Also, can you explain how he waged a genocidal campaign against "The Kurds"?

You seem to be just repeating what others have told you.

-- Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:47 pm --

Mike - can you explain which "millions" Saddam murdered? Also, can you explain how he waged a genocidal campaign against "The Kurds"?

EDIT: And no...obviously it doesn't include folk Saddam murdered because it's from 2003. If you've something to say, then just say it instead of using rhetorical questions.

I understand the "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" arguments.

But the first thing I thought when I saw this was "Why?"

And I am sorry to say but my gut reaction was "Atonement." And when you see service personnel being flown over in coffins every week that isn't good enough. This gesture is about Blair. Nothing more and nothing less.

The Iraq Body Count, Iraqi Health Ministry, Associated Press, and Iraq Family Health Survey (conducted by the WHO, using a similar methodology to the other surveys but with a larger sample size), came to the conclusion of between 100,000-151,000 (upper range: 223,000). Those are the ones I'd trust. The 1,000,000 is often quoted but can't be sustained. Then you extrapolate to 2010 based on the levels of violence in 2007 but violence levels have fallen substantially since then. The figures I have most respect for is the Iraq Body Count because they try to count every single death. They don't extrapolate based on survey samplings. It is certain that this methodology will result in a underestimation but their margins of error must surely be far more credible than an extrapolation based on a relatively small sampling.
