Liverpool fan Mal James expresses his concerns on where the riches of Manchester City and Chelsea are taking football.

Like many Liverpool fans, on the last day of the season, I was hoping a certain team from Manchester would not win the Premiership.

But no, that team was not Manchester United.

The prejudice that some Liverpool fans have against United will click in at this point and they will start calling me a ‘traitor’, or not a ‘real red’ etc.

But I don’t dislike any team simply because of who they are. However, I do dislike a team because of what they are. So this has been a bad season for me because as well as City winning the Premiership, Chelsea won the Champion’s League.

Let me explain. Think back to the days when Liverpool dominated in Europe. It was because LFC was a superbly run club. It rose to dominance because of good overall management and good team managers.

Since then, other clubs have done well for the same reasons. Arsenal deserved their period of prominence. A very well run club and an excellent manager. Manchester United rose to being the pre-eminent club because (Glazers apart), it has been organised superbly, with the best manager.

What happened to Liverpool in the meantime? The club never managed to replace Bob Paisley.

Even worse, David Moores took over, brought in Rick Parry, and it was stagnation. By the 1990’s when Manchester United had developed marketing/retail outlets all over The World, Liverpool had a solitary club shop in the centre of the city.

So, no, I don’t feel jealousy, towards United, or Arsenal when they do well. I admire them. Any resentment is reserved for the people who so badly mismanaged Liverpool over many years.

But what of City? Or Chelsea? This is where what they are comes in. These are clubs that were going nowhere (except towards bankruptcy in Chelsea’ case). Then they were bought as rich mens’ playthings.

Neither club has been run on any kind of sound financial footing. They are the Del Boys of football. He was a loser who became successful by chance. One thing only meant they won major honours last season, and it was not a history of good management. It was money.

Where United and Arsenal became wealthy because they were successful, Chelsea and City have become successful because they are wealthy.

And where will this take football? The Premier League could move towards a Scottish situation where one club will win the title year on year because the rich kid who owns it will simply spend to do so.

While Manchester City fans might relish the thought, it would, in the longer-term, be bad for football and ultimately the Premier League. If a race is a foregone conclusion, then eventually many people stop watching it.

What a jealous twat indeed...

The race has basically been a foregone conclusion for the last 20 years and would have been this year except for City's goal diff. This more about Liverpool not winning fook all due to the fact that they didnt put money by when they were..

A very scared liverpool supporter who knows his team will struggle to win the premier in the next 10 years!

Funny thing is his team will have to spend money they don't generate to actually have a chance in the future of winning the premier league!

It's all about me me me look at our history we should be challenging.. like I said a very scared bitter Jealous supporter!!

Clowns like this make my day.

Liverpool for nearly a decade a second division team.

Littlewoods invested in late 50s.

Bring in Shankly, St John, Yeats, etc

Get promotion and into Europe.

The original sugar daddies.

"Palpatine in star wars he sould be talking about liverpool
: He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power...which, eventually of course, he did"

there pissed off cause they were a shoe in for top 4 even if they didnt win title, now city and spurs have overtook them, everton and newcastle nearby as well, i used to like kiverpool and arsenal but as people said once we became athreat we were no longer other peoples 2nd favorite team, i think i can live with that.

Another one who doesn't like clubs riding the gravy train unless his own is on it.

Sorry Liverpool but for 20 years you were happy to be one of the elite big four (generally 4th) not giving a shiny shit about anyone outside it, believing that next year will be your year but now the horse has bolted and the stable door appears to be well and truly shut with you and your team on the outside!

Try humility and a few years of suffering. Come back in 35 years and tell me how you got on. Hypocrites.

So he doesnt like Chelseas money ??
What all of it or just the 50 million they paid for Torres..

As its been said Red Scouse were the original Sugar Daddies and to this day they spend, even more so with Henry at the helm. Success however cannot be achieved when you spend £104m on Carroll, Downing, Henderson, Enrique and Suarez.

Irony, forever lost on Merseyside, enjoy Europa League when it crops up every now and again.

Bored to fuck with this now. I can't even be arsed to make the obvious points anymore because I really couldn't give less of a fuck.

Leave them to their jealousy and we'll get on with what we've always done, supporting Manchester City FC, who in my eyes whether in division 2 or as champions of England are and have always been the greatest football club in all the world.
