Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 25 - OB1 – Soundtracks (pg 422)

My thinking for this new thread was to recommend artists and songs that we might not have heard before.​

Obviously it’s open to individual interpretation and if you want o choose
your favourite tracks of all time that’s fair enough.
I decided to keep my choices to a theme Americana ,which I love.
I also kept away from the usual suspects although they would definitely appear in my best of.

So onto my playlist , let me tell you it’s extremely hard to narrow choices to just 5!
I’ve seen all these artists live and chatted to most of them.


Track 1
Real Country Dark Neal Casal

Sadly like a few great Artists, two of which we’ve had on the other thread, Neal took his own life a couple of years ago.
As well as being an excellent singer song writer ,he was a great guitarist and played in a number of bands including Hazy Malle, Chris Robinson’s Brotherhood and Ryan Adams and The Cardinals.
I met Neal a couple of times seeing him live, a gentle nice guy and a sad loss.
Jason Isbells song St Peter’s Autograph is about him.
Like all the other Artists here I could’ve picked numerous songs
I think this a good representation of his body of work.
Nice voice,mandolin ,honky tonk piano, harmonica,good guitar playing
and melancholic lyrics , what’s not to like?

Track 2
you can’t talk to me like that Rod Picott


Another singer song writer with a great back catalogue,
Rods best mate from school is Slaid Cleaves and they co write songs and put their own versions out.
Rods an Artist I know personally, I’ve had dinner with him In Nashville
and met him lots of times when he’s toured the UK, the last time just before the Pandemic when he played round the corner from me at ‘Davenham Folk Club.
Rods had a troubled love life not unlike myself!
This song brings back painful memories of when I split from my 2nd wife, I know I
sound like Worsleyweb!
It’s not one of his best but personal to me.


Track 3) Hells Kitchen The Westies

The Westies are essentially Michael McDermotts band , an artist I’ve loved since the 90s and a favourite of Stephen King.He rarely tours outside the US or even his home town Chicago, I was lucky enough to catch a gig at Scuba’s in Chicago about 20yrs ago.Another great and prolific song writer who was compared to Springsteen in his early days.
I love the story telling in this song.

Track 4)By the Time My Head Gets to Phoenix Peter Bruntnell.

A slightly left field choice as Peter is an ex English school teacher,
and he looks like one.Another nice humble guy, but a great songwriter.
I first saw Peter live at the ‘Band on the wall’.
This song is about cryogenics an unusual subject for an Americana track.
Peter’s backed by members of Wilco on this album,again he has
a good amount of albums out there.Check out his song ‘Mr Sunshine’
all you Trump fans.

Track 5) Moving Back Home #2. RIchmond Fontaine

They were a vehicle for lead singers songs.
I’ve seen them live a few times before they disbanded,last time
at the Britons Protection.
Willy Vlautin is a more a novelist than a performer, so much so
he’s written a number of award winning novels , two which were made into
films.Listen to his short story ‘A Jockey’s Christmas’ an audio book on Spotify.
The songs are basically story’s set to music mostly set in Reno.
After RF split he formed another band’ The Delines’with a female lead singer,who is very good.
I chose this track from another large back catalogue, as the music is expanded by having members of Calexico on it.

So that’s the inaugural playlist,it could’ve been twenty tracks!

Wow! I'm impressed that you had dinner with Rod Picott - in Nashville or otherwise!

I like his Welding Burns album, and it's interesting to hear both his and Slaid Cleaves' different versions of the songs they write together.

I've heard Neal Casal on CRB and Ryan Adams' albums but not his solo stuff.

Looking forward to giving the playlist a listen.

PS: You've got 6 songs in there, thus breaking your own rule - so whilst I'll listen to it, for the purposes of this thread, I'll pretend that the Chuck Prophet song isn't there :)
 
The downfall of Ryan Adams after The Cardinals split is spectacular.
Ashes and Fire was good but the rest after that are average to utter shite.
I have went from a super fan to dreading every new shite release we get now.
The Cardinals were brilliant live as well.

Cheers haven’t seen that before.Problem with RA he releases so much new stuff
theres no quality control, he’s released two double albums and single LP so far this year!
the single album FM is ok and you could probably make a descent single album from the two doubles.
 
The great thing about Spotify is if you stay online you get tracks based on the playlist.
