Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

Time to get controversial. Angel of Death - Slayer. A nice ditty about one of the great stains on humanity, Nazi ‘scientist’ Josef Mangele
I doubt this will make the cut!!

I assume we are avoiding the more obvious and famous songs irrespective of quality? There's a fair few: Vincent, God Save The Queen, The Queen is Dead, Free Nelson Mandela etc. Clearly none in the same league as Ra-Ra-Rasp... but decent enough in their own right.

Given the nature of the genre, if there were more folkies on this thread there'd be loads of properly historical nominations. Today I'm going for someone I'm supposedly* related to...

Kevin Barry - The Wolfe Tones (ideally a live version)

(*I say supposedly because every plastic paddy on the face of the planet claims a link to a figure from either the easter rising or war of independence and my auntie who claimed this was a bit hit and miss with her assertions about the family, though this was one of the more plausible ones).

The Trials of Cato - Tom Paine's Bones.

Usually I like to say something or pick out a key line, but this one doesn't need much.

A band I really like, seen live this one really has some gusto and the knees up. The recorded version is a fair bit tamer, but still has some energy particularly the second half.

And unlike a few more obscure links or 'mood' name drops, this one very much touches on the person and their role in history.

That was going to be my tomorrow pick! Sadly haven't seen them live.

Not sure if he counts as a historical figure, certainly an American icon. He did however play historical figures!

“John Wayne” - John Martyn

The late, great John Martyn - have been waiting to post a JM track. Once had a drink with him in a bar in Edinburgh!

Surprising JM doesn't appear more frequently on these threads. Crossed my mind more than once to nominate Solid Air on the album thread. Read an interview with Linda Thompson where she mentioned that he was her paper boy and he used to tell her he'd be famous! She said he was the most confident youngster she had ever met until she encountered Rufus Wainwright.

We've had an actress since day 1, so no reason we can't include the Duke!

Again, if they were famous enough to get a song written about them, then all good!

I waited a few days for this to get played, and since it hasn't, I'm back to a non-musical non-biblical theme today:

“Ben Franklin’s Song” – The Decemberists

Co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and The Decemberists, this song didn't make it into Hamilton as ole Ben wasn't a character in the play. However, once Miranda shared it with Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, additional lyrics got added and then Miranda added the bridge to complete this song.

There's two versions to this song, and I'll add the one that says F so we don't have The Streets explicit discussion again. Both get the point across, and I'm fine with either.

Alright, diplomacy happens at night
