Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

For some reason (even accounting for shorter duration) there was less new to me on this list than previous ones. None the worse for it though and the stuff new to me almost without exception I enjoyed.

On the new front, the winner was Soapbox - watched the fun video to this which ironically was probably dead easy to shoot because there are so few buses these days. Had a listen to a couple of others by them too like Added Value Glasgow. Oh to be young, a bit belligerent and wanting to make music.

Also honourable mentions to Silversun Pickups, Viagra Boys to Lefties Soul Connection.

Of the stuff I was familiar with I am never going to skip anything from Rumour and Sigh which it has crossed my mind to nominate as an album. Really like Gary Clark Jr. too. Hadn't heard Friday on My Mind or Hyperactive for quite a while so they amongst many others were good fun.

I got some sort of bizarre perversion reading other people's woes!

Haha!

Songs I hadn't heard in ages but really liked included Genesis - Misunderstanding, Foo Fighters - Exhausted, Thomas Dolby - Hyperactive! and Aerosmith - Back In The Saddle.

Songs I hadn't heard but liked included Soapbox - Private Public Transport (great song!), Ryan Bingham - Blue and The Black Keys - Long Way From Home. (just ordered the album)

Top marks goes to the Vivaldi piece. An astonishing piece of music which I'd obviously previously listened to, and heard on many tv programmes, but never sat down and actually paid attention to. Beautiful.

I'm afraid I've struggled with this playlist. It's not any better or worse than previous playlists, it's just the slog of getting through so many songs it feels like a chore.

There were plenty of classics that I either enjoyed or skipped because I knew them off by heart (I'm sure you know which ones).

My favourites from BimboBob's original selection were "Cold as Ice" and "Mr. Blue Sky".

Some older but less familiar and new stuff that I enjoyed were songs by: Seryn, Stevie Wonder, Vivaldi, The Black Keys, Michael Kiwanuka, Lefties Soul Connection, Dave Brubeck, Buddy Guy and Live.

I happened to pick one of the rarer Seryn songs without a banjo unfortunately. Have a listen to their song Untitled, for some plink-plonk. Disappear is a good tune too.

Played footy last night which did me good mentally and physically, head colds almost gone.Sorted out work crap ,wifes still moaning but that’s the norm lol.

so today

’I feel Alright’ Steve Earle
Sorry all, I had missed this song earlier to add to the playlist and just noticed this, so please give this song a listen if you haven't already.

My apologies @Mancitydoogle , hoping you are still feeling this way despite my blunder.

How Are You Feeling?

Thanks to @BimboBob for putting this playlist concept together. The randomness of what was coming next was quite unique, not to mention I had moments in hearing key songs that I could think back to what was happening that part of the week (“Misunderstanding” made me chuckle). I appreciated the many songs I knew quite well, but most of all, it was the ones I hadn’t heard.

Of the initial selection, I enjoyed “Mr. Blue Sky" – ELO and “My Bacon Roll" – Mark Knopfler the most. I think I know word by word and note by note “Cold as Ice” in my sleep!

The Big Winner
For me it clearly was “Cold Little Heart” – Michael Kiwanuka. I usually listen to the songs on the playlist once it is fully complete, and the new ones will just hit me when they hit me, and this one did like a ton of bricks. Just a simply amazing song. Thanks for this, @threespires , and now I’ve now got an album to listen to (a great thing – not a joke!). I recognize the production and heavy influence of Danger Mouse, which definitely added to the surprise enjoyment of something new.

My top 10 other new tracks (not yet heard in some or no particular order):
  1. “In A Broken Dream” – Python Lee Jackson, Rod Stewart, missed this the first time around in the 70s
  2. “I Don’t Understand Anything” – Everything But The Girl, channeling that Emily Sayers Indigo Girls sound I enjoy
  3. “Chemtrails” – Placebo, need to listen to more of them…
  4. “Sling Shot Pt2” - Lefties Soul Connection, very nice jam and organ!
  5. "Doomsville" - The Rainmakers
  6. “Mood of the Morning" – Shack, had a Joe Jackson vibe to this
  7. “Believe” – Bernard Fanning, appropriate song conveying the feeling from the description
  8. “I’m So Happy I Cry” – Fantastic Negrito, Tank and the Bangas, Tarrina Ball
  9. “Blue” – Ryan Bingham – not just a “Yellowstone” star, camper in the song pic is different than his Capri Camper https://www.truckcampermagazine.com/news/enter-to-win-ryan-binghams-capri-camper/
  10. “Private public transport” – SOAPBOX, still smile when hearing this and saw plenty of waiting for this during my last UK trip
  11. "I Feel Alright" - Steve Earl, my mistake for missing, so giving this a Spinal Tap 11

Best of a song I know:
"The Four Seasons: Concerto No. 4…" – Antonio Vivaldi,
Adrian Chandler, just beautiful from start to finish, enjoyed hearing this as not a backdrop to something else

Top 10 tracks I knew but enjoyed listening to again (in some or no particular order):
  1. “Broken” – Tears For Fears, and memories of last summer’s concert
  2. “Anxiety” – Jason Isbell, from my favorite album of his
  3. “Exhausted” – Foo Fighters, that first album is pretty much all Dave Grohl, amazing
  4. “Racing For the Prize” – The Flaming Lips
  5. “Comfortably Numb” – Pink Floyd, still think of the movie when hearing those songs
  6. “Take Five” – The Dave Brubeck Quartet, very nice and a great chill tune
  7. “Personal Jesus” and “Home” – Depeche Mode, and might like the second better too…
  8. “Feeling Good” – Muse, have been a fan since seeing them open for U2
  9. “Waking Up Tired” – Hoodoo Gurus
  10. “Numb” – Linkin Park and the other by Gary Clark Jr (a twofer!)

No worries, I know how difficult it is doing one these Spotify playlists with songs being added quickly.
My mood is still good and hopefully will remain so after tomorrow night.

That's a great description of the Black Pumas album. I read something that described Michael Kiwanuka as a cross between Pink Floyd and Isaac Hayes which I thought was a pretty good description too.

Might be 1994's Throwing Copper with "Selling The Drama" their big single?

I think their 1999 The Distance To Here (TDTH) is my 2nd favorite album from them, very close to their second album and most popular release as mentioned above.

Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk really focused in his lyrics for this one. TDTH was their most spiritual, positive, and uplifting album to date. The name of the album refers to the importance of focusing on the present instead of the future.

Michael Kiiwanuka’s Pink Floyd tribute
Agree with that description. Danger Mouse has that type of production influence that sounds like them, I'd agree.

I've enjoyed that entire album after hearing it last night, especially the title track and "The Final Frame". More to come, I am sure.
The Black Pumas ,great album that sounds like it’s was old undiscovered Stax album.
Their sound really is unique, agreed. That whole album was another soundtrack during the pandemic with those uplifting and powerful songs.

BTW, I highly highly recommend visiting the Stax museum in Memphis after enjoying some Central BBQ downtown. ;-)
