Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

@journolud thanks for posting this.

I remember hearing, and watching the video to, Made Up In Blue back in the 80s on an indie compilation videotape called "Gimme Shelter", which I still have, and which was released as a fund raiser for the homeless charity Shelter. I've done a quick internet search and it appears that the videotape came free with Melody Maker magazine in 1987. Some familiar indie names from that period such as The Mighty Lemon Drops, Shop Assistants, The Soup Dragons and also The Wedding Present which you mention, are on the video but as well as The Bats, there are also songs by The Verlaines (Doomsday) and The Chills (Leather Jacket), so whoever decided on the compilation certainly seemed fond of that Dunedin Sound. I hadn't heard of this term but recall The Bats song as one of the stand outs on the compilation and good to see that they have endured. Will have a listen and thanks again for the reminder!

Not really my thing as such this. But quite enjoyable to have on, if in the right mood. I say that, but then I did spend a good chunk of last year listening to the King Stingray album which is of a similar mood/style. Worth giving it a go Journo if you havent heard it imo, I think I put it forward in the album of the year thread last year (feels weird calling it last year).

Other than Tally Ho which I have to be honest, I found quite grating, the songs all hold their own and work both individually and in this playlist.

The standouts for me are Doomsday and Pink Frost. Down in Splendour is a good finish with a softer feel.

Will happily let the algorithms throw more related suggestions my way, but probably wouldnt actively pursue further. The two songs above I'd easily revisit time to time.

It wasn't a great start for me when I heard "Tally-Ho" at the start of this list. I didn't like the OTT vocals or the short stabby synth.

Thankfully, the rest of the playlist was wonderful - a real treat to listen to. In fact I couldn't get "Made Up In Blue" out of my head at bedtime last night! This and The Straightjacket Fits were the pick of the bunch, but I also enjoyed the tracks by The Verlaines and The Chills as well. It's something a bit different to what I listen to, and I've played the songs several times now although I skipped "Tally-Ho" after the first couple or listens :)

I really appreciate what you've done with this playlist, @journolud. You've brought to our attention a niche genre that I'd never heard of, and as I've said before, it's nice to get something that isn't UK/US-centric.

New Zealand music has featured in my listening over the years. Crowded House sit at #3 in my all-time artists list, and I think that with his output upto the mid 2000s, Neil Finn is probably the best chorus/middle-8 writer since The Beatles.

Then there's his brother, Tim Finn; their earlier band, Split Enz and of course together for two albums as The Finn Brothers and Neil's son Liam, who has a fantastic album, I'll Be Lightning. I also listened to Don McGlashan's band, The Mutton Birds. I've seen Crowded House, Neil, Tim and The Mutton Birds in various concerts over the years.

Maybe you should give the King Stingray album another blast as well then ;).

I don't remember you mentioning that in the Album of the Year thread.

I was sure I did. But it was a busy summer and I may well likely have missed doing it. Nobody to blame but myself.

I even considered contributing a song off the album to the team playlist just gone, but avoided it as I assumed it would be an easy guess given I thought I had it on the album thread.

Currently I’m enjoying this playlist more than The Pixies album in the other thread.

I don’t mind Tally-Ho. It’s very much throw away upbeat pop, but I think I understand journo’s rationale in starting the playlist like this.
As a short playlist goes I think @journolud has put together an excellent package and has the order of his choices spot on.

The two highlights for me are Pink Frost and Down in Splendour.

After the poppy start they bookend the other two perfectly.

Well done lad.
Great picks this week.
I hope I can keep the standard up.

I'll definitely give the King Stingray a listen, looks interesting from what I've read about it

It took me a long time to realise how good Crowded House are, I think I had some unaccountable unconscious bias against them. Having belatedly "discovered" them though over the last year or so I love some of their stuff. I think the Beatles comparison isn't overstating the quality of their work.

I dare say I'll get round to listening to listening some more Neil Finn at some point, a recommendation on where to start wouldn't go amiss although Spotify top tracks is always a default option.

Don McGlashan came up on the random tracks on Spotify after I'd played my own playlist, I can't remember which song but it wasn't one I got into.
