Blue Moon Top 100 Bands Artists - Full List of Artists (pg 287)

Just that most music fans would know who Counting Crows were. I wasn't accusing you of a Manchester bias.

Just to return to the point I have been making all day, what is it about The Stone Roses debug that is so good? What makes it stand out from other albums that were released around the time?

Like I said, I don't dislike them, it's the massive disconnect between output/achievement and how much they are lauded that I'm struggling with.

Indeed. Although I'm coming to realise that "the scene" is more important than the music in many cases. Counting Crows "problem" is that they stem from the blues/country/traditional roots of music and deal in trivialities such as songcraft, something that is the antithesis of many of these indie bands (I suppose it's also called "alernative" for a reason).

I've said it before: I was in the right place and right time for Madchester, but the music didn't move me as much as that coming from America or Australia.
It doesn’t seem to be just a Manchester bias though , it seems to be a Manchester in a specific quite short time period bias.
As I’ve posted if I was going to choose the best Mancheter band it would be 10CC , and while I liked the first 3 Oasis albums, I can’t think of any other Manchester band of the top of my head I’d put anywhere near my top 100 other than 10 CC. Dare would probably be the nearest.

But I don't think it is unreasonable a thing to say I have never hear of the counting crows or to beleive they registered heavily here, they were never that big an import to this country, and having now listened to them would not have been in genres I was listening to and having looked I do recall Mr Jones and know it charting here and it was a song I would turn over the wireless or go make a drink or something as it was crap.

They appeared and dissapeared as fast so to me I have no recollection of them and am thankful now I have listened to them today.

Now if it was someone like dinosaur jr, archers of loaf, afghan wigs or even the lemonheads that had been used as examples I would easily recognise those bands even with them not being stand out imports.

Disappeared. Counting Crows are touring the UK this year.

They were were good in concert when I saw them. I'm not going to get into comparing them to The Stone Roses; very different acts, although Adam Duritz can sing.

On this whole Manchester thing then Yes should be higher.
Jon Anderson born just 20 mile down the road.
One of Rick Wakeman sons is a City Fan and Rick himself frequented Maine Road a lot.
Erm and that’s it

Think there are a lot of succesful bands touring and releasing albums that many think have disappeared ,just because they don’t get played on the radio in the UK. Or at least nothing they’ve released in the last 30 years does.

dinosaur jr, -- Feel The Pain is one of my favo(u)rite songs of all time; I need to listen to them more
archers of loaf -- they were one of my very last cuts on my top 15. Might have even been the last cut. Vee Vee was in my top 20 records on the @BlueHammer85 thread.
afghan wigs -- not as familiar with them but the little I've heard I like
the lemonheads -- It's A Shame About Ray is another record I like a lot; the next one was weak unfortunately.

Without a sound was a great LP, feel the pain is a top song, I also loved outta hand on that album and to then go into the intro to grab it was genius arrangement.

I recall BBC2 had a really good music show SNUBTV which would promote indie and alrernative music from the UK and beyond, first dinosaur jr song they had on was freak scene, after hearing that I bought Bug and was hooked on them ever since.

A very underated band in my opinion.

I had the roses at 13 and they were always going to make it high up on the list on here. I think people vote for best bands in totally different ways. For instance a poster whose name escapes me said he had 20 albums from someone but weren’t in his top 15. If I had 15 albums from anyone I would be almost cult like in my following.

I take the best of what anyone does rather than the quantity which comes afterwards. My Spotify is full of artists with only 1 or 2 songs. I’m not interested in fillers or even half decent songs, there are probably only a dozen or so artists where I have double figures of their output.

My dad brought me up basically on the 60s and the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones and Simon and Garfunkel were his and my favourites. From early teens to early 20s you naturally find other things and it’s a special time. Hence artists for me like talking heads new order the stone roses up to oasis have an effect.

I voted using my Spotify account and the thought process was if I was dumped on a desert island with only 10 songs from 15 acts were allowed who would I pick.

I only have about 800 songs on the account and I don’t listen to my vinyl or cd collection anymore but apart from the odd one the Mrs sneaked in or a few mistakes when I was obviously pissed(must delete those at some point:-)) I consider them all great songs.

The Stones roses just about made it on that basis. Other groups could have made lots decent songs and 5 great ones but they wouldn’t make the cut.

Fleeting greatness trumps decent longevity for me however for some this will not be the case and it’s a valid argument.

That would be me.

i'd class them all as great albums, I love each and every one (struggle with Morning Glory) but to the wider audience it will only be Morning Glory and Definitely Maybe that will define their legacy - I think there later work is all but forgotten and 'Be Here Now' is universally panned.
In fairness that’s a big fucking audience you’re speaking on the behalf of:-) For the non obsessed fan plenty will like many well known songs from later albums. They have a good body of work that far outweighs the Stone Roses tbh. If anything people downplay Oasis and concentrate to much on the brothers nonsense.

Ha ha cute

For the record, no bands from SF but I did have two from LA (Van Halen and X) and one from Seattle (Sleater-Kinney).

Steve Miller Band -- love him, along with Hotel California, Fly Like An Eagle the first record I bought with my own money.
Hot Tuna -- no
Metallica -- my views are well known, I like Enter Sandman and Sad But True and nowt else
Faith no more -- like them, great sense of humo(u)r
Dead Kennedys -- love Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, all else, meh
Jefferson Airplane -- hippie twaddle
Santana -- overrated
Moby Grape -- blech
Journey -- embarrassing
Flipper -- much better in concept than execution, also very funny
Jefferson Starship -- like them better than Airplane. Freedom At Point Zero is a good record.
I had to trade in my confirmation of who shot JFK to obtain that list......... ;-)

Many bands tour, and tour and tour, when I say dissapear it doesn't mean they don't exist.

I said I had never heard of them, and ratified that to I could not recall them until after a bit of research the reason being they had no impact beyond a small time period here.

They have a fanbase here and so touring is obviously worth thier while, but I could probably list a lot of bands I go see that you would in a similar way say you haven't heard of.
