Blue Shirt, Blue Shorts, White Socks?

Well I get it as 63yrs of Navy Blue socks – and you're also right that from 1903 till 1951 it is recorded we wore navy socks. Not sure how accurate the data is from that period however, and you also need to consider the two World Wars that occurred during that time.... Competitive football was suspended for a total of 10yrs during that period, so that's then 53yrs.

I assume people are getting the kit stats from the Historical Kits website but I'd like to stress that the website, though excellent, is not entirely accurate and where gaps exist it relies on fans to get in touch and contribute. For example I have colour photos from the 1962-63 season which clearly show City wearing white socks, but the website claims they wore blue with a maroon line. Until the day comes when someone, preferably a MCFC researcher, documents every season and produces images to show what kits were worn, then I'd say it's impossible to say what City's most worn socks were. Even within seasons the socks were not consistent (neither were the shirts at times!) and so we actually need game by game analysis. That's easy for the PL era because almost every game has been filmed, but for earlier games we have to rely on description, photos (majority of which will be in black and white), film and memory. I'd love to do a kit book, but in my research to date I've found so many inconsistencies that even a City enthusiast writing about City's kits will not get it right.

Incidentally, I believe we wore black socks for many years before 1951 and some people have assumed they are always navy (black & white photos again!).

In terms of general colours... sky blue (previously City have also worn Cornflower Blue, Cambridge Blue, Laser Blue and almost every shade of pale/sky blue) shirts, white shorts are our traditional colours. As for socks - anyone's guess really, but I'd suggest our best were sky blue with maroon and white turnovers. We could even wear maroon numbers like we have done on occasion.

Away traditional colours - maroon shirts & white shorts. People automatically assume red & black stripes but maroon is the shirt colour we've worn second most after blue. Personally if we have to have 3 kits (modern football hey?) then I'd always suggest sky blue shirts/white shorts; maroon shirts/white shorts and red/black stripes/black shorts but I will say that Stripes always get messed around with now that shirts have sponsors & players names on. I always liked the diagonal kits though and would love a unique new style of diagonal kit preferably red/black diagonal on royal blue; or maybe even a maroon with blue & white diagonal, but I guess we all have our own crazy ideas. It's up to the experts at Nike & City to get this right.

(NOTE: On the Historical Kits site it references my MCFC Hall of Fame book as being where the evidence of some kits is from - in that book I never mention the type of kit worn. There are some images of players but from that era they are either black & white photos or coloured cig cards/Topical Times cards where a certain amount of artistic licence appears. I have seen cards where a player is clearly wearing another team's kit but the shirt's been coloured to match their current club, so I'd hate anyone to think that because my books are referenced on that site that I explain about the colours in my book because I don't, certainly not in that book anyway).

I'm in the light blue/white shorts/ light blue socks camp with the 2nd and 3rd kits being red/black stripes etc and then white shirt with a maroon and dark blue hoop/sash and a combination of maroon and blue shorts and socks. 3rd kit might be a bit busy but trying to get all the popular scarf colours included !!

I agree with you on the home kit, to me blue white maroon are our colours. Always say maroon should be our established second shirt, as for 3rd white with sash is prefered On a side note my dad says he is sure when he was a kid he saw city late 50's early 60's in a gold shirt with maroon trim is this right?

Maroon & White Shirts with White (or Yellow?) sleeves
White Shorts
Yellow? Socks versus Preston Both Ends at Maine Road in '65/'66.

I was there.

i'm going for Blue and White (trim) Shirt, White Shorts and Maroon Socks (Blue or White or both trim).

why? dont mind the navy socks option, but for some reason think its a Lazio secondary colour. i know they tend to go for blue or white socks, but can see them going for navy too. Blue/White/Blue clashes with Napoli now, and the obviously the Coventry City all blue combo.

so opting for something original, something no one uses, something we probably havent used yet, but the colours are within our makeup as fans and as a club.

Definitely. Denis Law made his debut in that kit.

Nike just use one template for all their kits and just change the colours to suit the club. Absolutely no originality and they pay the club handsomely for the privilege. I bet next season's kit is just Barcas away this season with different colour socks.

I understand where you are coming from mate, when I think of Lazio I think white socks. In fact when I see City in white socks, I think of Lazio.

I've casually followed Italian football for 20 odd years and I've never once seen Lazio in navy socks. Perhaps some Italian posters could clarify if they ever have?

Sky blue shirts, white shorts and navy socks as a home kit is completely unique to City as far as I'm aware.

The only other team I have seen play in that combination was Sunderland in their third strip a few years ago. Niall Quinn was the chairman at the time, so I think the kit was probably a tribute to City.

Because Niall Quinn loves paying tribute to City

I don't have any problem with Quinn, think it's over-hyped paranoia that he hates City. I've seen him have plenty of good things to say about his time here and about the current set up. He seems to have more of a soft spot for Sunderland than us, but I've got no problem with that.
