Bluemoon Angling Thread

A nice evening session with the ultralight lure gear exploring my new "hotspot" and surrounding areas tonight resulted in five Jack pike and once small perch. My thoughts are turning to the rivers and particularly their barbel, though. I've flogged the lure gear longer than normal this winter/spring because I want a good perch. I've not even had a 2lber since last spring so I feel the clock is ticking for another 8 days and conditions are good.

Traffic chaos in the Weymouth area and a fishing frenzy for Noggsy including a return to Rutland on Sunday.

Still pissed off about Saturday but a few more of these and I'll forget all about it.

If you want to catch golden tench join Warrington AA mate. I was a member a couple of seasons in the mid 90s. I remember fishing several of their ponds at Antrobus, near J10, M56. You'd love fishing those pond's because they were easy fishing and stocked with some really interesting species. The blue carp, golden orfe, golden rudd and a few other bits and bobs made it worthwhile, and all in lovely countryside.

Just had a long weekend on Westwood Lakes lincolnshire. My mate pulled out a few Golden Tench. Bit of a trek from from stockport but good fishing.
 
Frustrating evening yesterday. After a little baiting my swim was fizzing, bubbles everywhere, but no matter what I did I couldn't get a bite. Altered depth, changed rigs, still the same. Must have been doing something wrong but not sure what. I did catch a nice skimmer and a small carp but not great for four hours.
 
Im lucky enough to have a caravan on the beautiful Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh...but as you can see Lower Lough Erne is huge...however i have access to a lovely secluded spot (yellow X).

Apart from sitting there for hours, how can i ensure its worth fishing? Will pre-baiting help? There are plenty of swans about, and ive seen otters.


I see guys out in small rowboats, mostly fishing for trout, but im hoping i can sit on the bank and coarse fish.....

There will be fish there. If you've got a decent depth in front of you, you will catch. If I were in your shoes, I'd pre-bait with particles rather than groundbait and persist. The fish will come eventually.

Cheers mate...will spending a lot more time down there now that summer is on its way.....

How far in advance is it worth pre-baiting? i mena, even if not fishing,,,is it worth feeding the area im gonna fish....to start attracting fish.....or just before i start?

I used to fish a lot in Ireland including Lock Erne. First of all you need to find how deep the water is by plumbing it. If you can find the "drop off", ie where it drops down to say over 8 feet, prebait just beyond that with brown crumb, casters and sweetcorn. Do it for say 3-4 evenings and then fish the next day. Even just once the night before can be enough but the more the better.

If you just chuck your pre-bait anywhere the water might only be 3-4 feet deep and you won't catch. It's that important.

I've known that happen, mate, particularly with bream.

Often it's when you've baited with small baits, say micro pellets or groundbait, but have a big bait on the hook. They become preoccupied hoovering up the small stuff from the silt, causing the bubbles, and they'll ignore a bigger bait. Alternatively if you aren't already, switch to a hair rig.

What baits will you have access to ?

I ask because, if I have maggots and groundbait I'd tend to fish for a few hours to see if anything is knocking about. If fish are already there, you're in luck, and you just need to keep feeding and bait up with corn etc at the end of the day for next morning.

If they aren't there, pre-bait in the evening and keep trying next morning if only for a couple of hours. You'll soon know if they are there. Like anywhere, early morning or late evening is always best. If you are fishing the same spot every day you won't need too much baiting because you'll be baiting as you fish and, if there are no fish there, your bait will be lying around being augmented each day

If you are just using worms, corn or bread, results may be slower coming but stick it out as you should pick up bigger fish.

Cheers pal. I was baiting and fishing with maggot. I ended up going a couple of inches over depth and that helped a little.

I usually just go with maggots...so early or late are best times to fish?

Think i need to get down again and plumb it...try and get a good idea of the shape/depth of whats in front of me :-)


As a kid i just used to fish with a simple float/waggler set up.....any suggestions for ideal rig? Im lead to believe theres a lot of bream and roach / hybrids in there

If this was happening with maggots something was wrong with your presentation by the sound of it. A little bunch on a hair might have solved the problem. Or a smaller hook/lighter line. You may even have been overbaiting. You could have added the odd pinch of sweetcorn or pellet or other bigger bait to the feed and fish with that on the hook.

I suppose the eternal problem-solving is why we love it so much.
