Bluemoon Angling Thread

That's some serious barbel hauling, BMR. Well done mate. I'm on the Wye for a week in September and you've really whetted my appetite.

I had an afternoon stalking carp and tench with my centre pin on Saturday in a "secret" little pond. Had a number of perch and had a swim full of bubbling tench but couldn't get a bite. They were preoccupied on pellets and I'd only brought worms and corn.

Sunday morning a mate and I had a short session on the Ribble in bright sunshine, and managed one 7lb barbel.

Cheers mate. I'm very privileged and grateful to snorky that he invites me on there once or maybe twice a season as a guest of his strictly private salmon syndicate. It very rarely gets any course fishing pressure so it's easy fishing tbh.

That said, I've been an angler 49 years and experience, particularly river craft' helps big time. Tackle must be robust(as you know) and I bought a pair of Shimano 6000s and a pair of Korum twin tip 1.75/2.2 TC rods(think I may have previously mentioned it). Reels loaded with 13lb Fox camo. I simple 3oz running cage feeder to (about) 18" tail of 12lb Fox illusion fluorocarbon and a no/10 barbless hair- rig hook. Mainly 14mm pellet or 2 12mm Nash monster crab boilies.(trimmed).

Anyone reading this wanting to fish for barbel on a strong flowing snaggy river, you need the right gear, otherwise you'll lose fish. I lost a good fish due to trying to free my rig from a snag. When I realised I'd locked up on a snag I opened my bail arm and let the line go slack, the walked 20 yards downstream to try and free. I had tighten my clutch and walk backwards until the line snapped. Next cast hit a bite and lost the fish due to forgetting to set my clutch.

I'm itching to get back on the bank. My mate is a trout angler and wants to take me on Pennine trout fishery sometime this week. I'm not enthusiastic to catch stocked trout on a reservoir tbh.

@Didsbury Dave. Have you any recommendations for a decent power float rod mate, preferably splice tip? I really wanted to get my waders and bait apron on and trot a stick flow through, but both my 13 and 15ft river float rods aren't strong enough to cope. My mate has a Fox power float rod he's loathe to lend me. I'd buy one but they stopped making them several years ago.

Lucky you! I also have the Korum Power twin tip barbel rods and like the versatility of the two tips, as I fish big and small rivers. Have also got a brilliant old 1/5lb Fox rod which I use for small rivers, stalking, perch and chub. I have a really good Drennan 1.75lb which I rarely use any more because my angling OCD means I need two identical rods on the pod. Sad bastard.

My float rod is versatile although it's about 10 years old and isn't made any more: a Drennan Floatmaster 13/15 foot. However it hasn't got the power for barbel so I can't help you I'm afraid, mate.

Just rang angling direct in Dronfield to pick their brains. They tell me they don't have any 13ft power float rods suitable for barbel. I was advised to ring Harrison specialist rod builders in Liverpool. They manufacture mainly carp blanks. Told me they do a stepped up power float blank(£123) but they don't build the rod. Put me on to a Manchester based rod builder so I'm gonna give him a bell. May be too expensive though, as I can't justify paying for a rod I'll rarely use. I may go to £250 though. Ouch!

Seems excessive. I would have thought that there are loads of strong float rods used by the commercial carp boys that are perfect for barbel.

Power float carp rods aimed at commercial fisheries aren't upto the job mate. I need a fast action rod with 8-10lb line rating and balanced enough to trot a stick float. Tall order!

I rang the rod builder, tells me he's made a few Harrison blanks up for guys fishing Collingham Weir. However, I'm quoted just shy of £350. Double ouch!... Can't justify that. Done a bit of research and found Fox have brought a new rod out, the EOS barbel specialist 13ft 1.5 TC power float rod. All for a mere £60. I couldn't find tech spec on how long the butt is so I rang Fox and I'm told its18.5". A tad longer than I'd like as I don't like the butt too long when striking as it can catch my hip. Only a minor gripe so I'm sending for one today: )

No but I watched the last episode of Monster Carp and also the new Mortimer and Whitehouse on Friday and both were excellent. There’s some excellent fishing TV st the moment.

is there a new Mortimer and whitehouse ? channel ,day and time please, also I watched that monster carp on catch up and really enjoyed it, abit like top gear for fishing,all 3 seemed to get on well and have a laugh

That's what I did about 6 or 7 years ago. Rang Harrison who recommended Fosters of Birmingham which was relatively handy for me. Got a 14 footer with both a spliced and hollow tip with whippings etc to my spec. Cost £250. A very powerful rod and I've had decent carp and tench on it but no barbel as yet. But it's a bit heavier than I like for trotting.

Sent for a Fox EOS mate. I'm not expecting the lightest most balanced rod but for the money i doubt I'll regret buying it. 10lb line rated so it's up to the job. Can't wait to test it out. I really need to join a proper club as I got the fishing bug back last weekend. May as well get on PAAS waiting list now: )

Anyone got any decent club suggestions?
