I fish the lower Tummel not far upstream mate. (When allowed) Managed to land a couple of fish last September...
Not skill, just luck... I am a spawny twat! :)
Two in a trip is v good mate. Were they nice specimens? The one fish my lot catch are springers and from the photos I have seen look amazing fish. I have fished the beat at the hotel in Dunkers. That was fun..... not.

We had 6 between the three of us. All but one were hens. They were silver too, apart from the cock.
11lb was my biggest, but I have caught bigger in previous years. Not like springers though!
I didn't know a hotel in Dunkeld had a beat?

Good result. Yeah, if you drive north through Dunkeld, just after you leave the high street there is an entrance to the Hilton (or used to be) a long drive takes you to a country hotel that does all the activities. They have the water from the bridge to a mile or so upstream of the hotel. My eldest son got married there. On the banks of the Tay. A days fishing is not that steep but the hotel has pretensions way above its delivery capability.

Ah, I see mate. There are quite a few beats like that!

Yeah. The only other Salmon fishing I have done was on Lower Floors on the Tweed. A mate invited me. Another waste of time because of the low water. He told me to get on the beat you have to also have at least a weeks accommodation at the Duke of Roxburghs hotel which was eye wateringly expensive. For me Salmon fishing is tantamount to fishing in a swimming pool whilst throwing wads of £20 notes into the water. But then I have never experienced the thrill of catching a salmon on the fly. Do you do any fly fishing for trout from a drifting boat?

What’s the general mood in your neighbours Oregan. Got a golf trip booked there in early June, assuming visitors are allowed into the US by that time. Are they looking to open up, or are they full on lockdown indefinitely.
Oregon is a fairly divided State, very liberal on the coast and very conservative inland. The inlanders probably haven't stopped doing their normal routine, coast probably on a strict lockdown. I think by early June you should be fine, I know around here restaurants and bars will be operating again regardless of what's happening with Covid, in fact one bar in the valley, 'The Knotty Pine' is planning a reopening on May 7th

Cheers mate. Well we’d most definitely be on the coast (Bandon). It’s a tourist area though, so hopefully it will open. Bigger hurdle for us is likely to be international travel restrictions to/from the US. We have guys planning on travelling from UK, Aus, Canada and Houston, so can’t leave it until last minute. Things will need to start opening up in a couple of weeks or we’ll have to pull the plug.

I personally wouldn’t risk it but I’m still waiting on a refund for my Spain trip, I will only be buying last minute from here on in.

I’d say I’m hovering between 1-2% likelihood of it happening. Probably just reschedule to next year. Lots of logistics and planning went into it (and excitement), mates from all over the world meeting up, so going to be tough to let it go. On top of missing out on a Canada ski trip at Easter with the family.

First world problems though.

The Tweed can be bloody expensive mate. I had a rod share week lower Tweed last summer too...
Never even saw a fish!
I used to trout fish all the time, reservoir and rivers.
I only salmon and sea trout nowadays.
I was chatting to bmr about coming up and fishing a reservoir with him when possible.
I have still got a drogue and a couple of boat seats in the garage somewhere.
I tend to salmon fish the lesser known or less posh beats at the cheaper times of the season in Scotland. You can still get some good deals especially if you don't mind blanking!

If you are up in Scotland and would like a day on Coldingham or the Lake of Menteith give me a shout. Both are beautiful lochs. Out of interest, why did you move to salmon over trout?

Thanks mate. I would love to. The same goes if you are ever in Herefordshire and fancy a days fishing for the single salmon that will be in the Wye! :)

I fell into salmon fishing many years ago after getting a late invite on the Lochy and having a great week. I still love sea trouting at night on the Annan too.
Is your nearest river the Tweed mate?

Seems crazy that you have to pay for it like that

Is anyone a member of Altrincham and district angling club?

I am a member of bay moulton currently which is good but a lot of the waters are Crewe way ?

am thinking Of switching when common sense on fishing prevails

Yeah, I am just south of Edinburgh. The Tweed is the closest major salmon river although the Ettrick and the Blackadder and the Whittader all have runs. The Tyne that runs through Haddington and joins the sea just west of Dunbar has a sea trout run as well I believe. The Clyde is 45 minutes away. I pass it every time on the way down to the Etihad and there is always two or three out bugging for Grayling. I think we pass the Annan on the way down too. I’m sure I would be more keen on the salmon if I had had success the two or three times I tried it. The lack of fish and the discipline required on some of the beats coupled with costs put me off a bit. Some of my mates love it despite the difficulties. I quite like match type fishing where you need to concentrate all day. The Scottish National has been cancelled this year though so hopefully we will be able to get out in a month or so for some club outings. Have a great weekend mate.

15 years ago my son had 2 salmon on the Whiteadder on his first and only attempt at fly fishing for salmon. Lucky boy.
