Bluemoon Angling Thread

Lol. Fishy tales. Seems like you're a bit more clued up than I suspected on course fishing mate judging by your recent posts. Where are you fishing at the mo, and are they day ticket waters or membership?
As you know work has sent me darn sarf so fishing Uxbridge Rovers waters nice mix of lakes/pits along with canal and rivers. Also access to some Thames water. Fancy a pop at the rivers for chub / barbel but not a clue where to start as I've only done trout salmon fishing as a kid on rivers and I'll need to speak to some cockney fucker to get local knowledge. Tempted just to have a wander and free line a bit of bread / meat. I'll probably do the canals in winter - I like catching fuck all when it's cold so I can keep my hands in my pockets.

I don't know for sure as I have fished there since around 1980. It holds (I'm told) big bream between 10-15lb. But many anglers are secretive on catches and location. Worth doing a bit of research I think mate, and see whether you think Bosley is worth targeting.
I’ll look into that, thanks for the tip mate. I’m mates with one of the bailiffs there who fishes it for carp and pike in the winter.

I lived in Hillingdon for a year in 1992 and had great fun on the day ticket gravel pit waters of the time: Farlows and Willow Park were favourites, mainly for tench which I liked at the time, just before I started on the carp fishing circuit.

Farlows is great - I'm too much of a tight arse. As you know a lot of great pits about here if you want to get the bivvy and beachcasters out ;-)

I used to catch tench on the float in those little bays, fishing with caster and worm, against lilies etc. Far fewer bivvies in those days. I know now it’s a carp water so I’m sure it’s expensive and busy.
As you say, if you did decide to go after bigger carp you’re probably in the best region in the whole UK with all the pits dug for the M25.

Sounds a good and varied choice of waters mate. If I was you I'd get on a bike and go cycling along the Thames looking for features and anglers in the know on barbel, as there are some belters in there. If you come across a decent looking angler a friendly approach and afew questions may well get you valuable info. If he/she is a miserable secretive twat but decent angler. Just sit behind observing methods, swim and bait used. Rest you'll have to do yourself and maybe put several fruitless hours on the bank as specimen barbel are either solitary fish or a few swimming together. Best of luck.

Not sure if some of them will survive HS2 construction mate. Savay lake is certainly under threat. The big carp thing just doesn't ring my bell tbh. In seriousness the top carp anglers are as skilled as anyone and have a lot of knowledge, but sitting there waiting for an alarm to go off just doesn't do it for me.

I'd be happy with decent chub tbh.

Haha. It’s endemic in fishing I’m afraid.

One of my fishing projects is the local river/canal system called The Calder. I’ve been targeting the big perch for 2-3 years now and been out probably weekly. During that time I’ve had three over 2lb with the biggest 2-13. I was out roving last week and there were a couple of noddies in a decent spot spinning. One told me he’d just had a big perch and did the finger size thing and I thought “might have made two pounds if he’s not exaggerating”. I did my roving and came back and bumped into his mate who told me that his mate had had a four pounder.

That’s a good indication of how noddies exaggerate size. Lots of them will weight their carp on the mat which can easily add 4lb plus, too. I’ve seen a pike angler claim 27lb without deducting his mat. My local newsagent in Bury years ago reckoned he’d caught a 6lb roach. That’s the best I ever heard but I hear it all the time.
6lb Roach, love it.

Come on watching city is ace

but fishing is FUCKING ACE

for men, mental health and everything a day on the bank is better than any tablet .
all blues who feel low in these difficult times get a rod join a club and have a lovely time and focus.

you won’t regret it.
Love going first thing in the morning half the time I just sit there with a coffee watching the sun come up before I even think of tackling up, last couple of outings there has been mink playing on the opposite bank probably spooking the fish but beautiful to see

absolutely beautiful. I love watching dragonfly.

I fish with my 13 year old and he got really excited about an albino bee going into the flowers. I never even knew it was a thing but it looked that way.

the little shit always catches More than me. But the winners is always a tench,

Its amazing what you see when fishing, many years ago our eldest had some tackle for christmas and was desperate to go fishing on the little river at the back of our house. Well it was cold wet and windy, the river was high and deep and unfishable really, but I consented just to go just to pacify him. I was a bit worried about the conditions and the state of the banks from a safety point of view, but knew of a sandy cutaway on a bend three fields away which was safe, so we headed for that.We cast a ledger rig out and had been there for about an hour and I could see we had no chance of catching anything, the river was fast and boiling and full of debris and it was freezing as well. So I sat there hoping that the lads enthusiasm would wane soon when something caught my eye floating towards us, a rat on a log? as far as I could tell from my huddled position. Thats funny I thought, and as it came past I stood up to take a closer look, well the "log" as I thought it was came to life when I moved, rolled over and disappeared into the swollen water....... because it was actually an otter gliding down this turbulent river, on its back, with a rat in its mouth!! Of course, I told lots of people what we had seen, but I dont think anyone ever believed me, refusing to think otters could live on such a small waterway. It was just a couple of years ago(20 odd years after) that I did some work for a guy on our estate who kept koi carp, his pond was strongly meshed up, so I asked him why. Bloody otters he said, plagued me for years, just leave the fishes tails when they get one. At last, confirmation, because over time I had begun to doubt it myself, funny thing is, his house is well away from the river as well. I dont think I will ever see the like again.

I caught fuck all today. Serves me right for saying the bream fishing I'm into is a piece of piss. Think I'll try again tomorrow - autumn definitely in the air now.
I can only take it you pissed on your maggots mate; )

And don't use hemp in your groundbait mix for bream over 2lb (like I told you yesterday), as it repels them, especially big bream.

Id already got it out the freezer! Got bites today but couldn't hit them. Should've changed to a smaller hook, and lighter hooklength as I could tell within an hour it was going to be one of those days, but was too idle. Got what I deserved - f all.
