Bluemoon Angling Thread

Wouldn’t surprise me although 5 sounds a lot. But most of those commercials have massive perch because they are the Alex predator.

I had an afternoon today so headed out to the same reservoir (Hilltop Reservoir). As it’s name suggests it’s really exposed and as I drove I realised it was windy as hell and I didn’t fancy an afternoon hanging onto my unhooking mat and brolly. So I diverted to a canal and set up two deadbait rods with the intention of searching the water half an hour in each spot.

I’d been fishing half an hour and some noddy with his noisy little girl decides to set up right next to me. I picked up my stuff and moved. Just before I cast a couple landed 10 yards next to me on the other side, with tackle more suited to marlin fishing.

I wasn’t feeling it and fucked off home without even casting. Every angler needs to follow that instinct sometimes.
Nothing scarier than an Alex predator if your called Alex ;-)

A bit wild and windy on the River Severn today. Height was good, 1.2m up but, unfortunately, still rising.

Managed 3 tiny barbel which my mate claims were actually gudgeon but we had a barbel each in the morning both between 6 and 7lbs. I caught mine on his rod whilst he was having a slash. That's my last two barbel have been on his rod which only goes to prove that if you ever go fishing with me, you've got to get to your rod quick.

Later on, I lost a couple of fish on maggot. Think one was a decent chub but the other, I suspect, was an eel that bit me off. Great day though.

I saw that yesterday was the last day of the mild spell so booked the afternoon off. Went up to the reservoir again and it was blowing an absolute hooley. Tucked under my brolly and it lashed it down all day. I fished two rods with deadbait and didn't get a touch. A grim day.

back out this morning ,hoping to end my 5 blanks on the run ,went to macc canal in adlington where my dortz had that big perch out, not sure what the locals thought of the speznaz clad looney wondering up and down the cold canal, but who cares , as soon as it started to get lighter i jumped out of the car ,and there was a kingfisher, we nodded at one another two expert predators acknowledging one another :),fishing near to a moored barge i started to retrieve my lure, then a flash, two giants racing for my lure, i struck the hook made contact ,hooked, i commenced battle,my heart racing, this is what i wanted out of this sort of fishing,me v nature, hooorah my blank run had ended, and there in my hand a perch , i didnt care about the weight , i didnt care about the size(although very very impressive) i had done what i had set out to do, more lessons learnt, and a majestic kingfisher racing down the shimmering canal. great couple of hours.

i will post a pic of my quarry

Well done PF! Lure fishing can be a right ballache. Sometimes they just aren't chasing. It's not unusual for me to go home after half an hour if I'm not feeling it. Well done on your persistence.

I left my diary free today to go fishing. At 06.30hrs I'm lying in bed next to a warm, soft, naked lady thinking "can I really be arsed," when she snuggles up and whispers "I think we should take that mattress to the tip".

In a trice I'm out of bed and into my fishing slobs. The river is so close that when I get there the coffee I made earlier is still too hot to drink. So I tackle up, cast in and sit back.

So far I've seen swans, mallards, a heron, a kingfisher, a green woodpecker, fieldfares and a thrush as well as the usual bankside birds.

And I know, when I'm too old to do it anymore, I'll look back on days like this and be glad I came.

Haha. Made me laugh. Good luck NN.

Went to my local trout fishery Ellerdine lakes, for the first time yesterday.
It was a tale of the one's that got away. I know, same old.
First loss was a decent sized rainbow, leaps out of the water, lands on the leader, snapped.
Later in the day, fished the margins using a black and gold humongous, hooked into a monster.
This would have easily been the biggest trout I have ever caught.
Had it on the hook for a good 5 minutes, drew a bit of a crowd......then the leader snapped.

Lesson learned, do not trust Leeda Profil leaders. This was a brand new out of the bag pre-tied knotless leader.
Prior to this, I had changed the leader, too again to a Leeda Profil, but had to get another brand new one, it had a tight knot in it midway.
These are the only Leeda leaders I have ever used, wonder why they were on offer?
Quality control missing here.
I am now switching to Orvis leaders.

The fishery it's self is well organised especially regarding Covid. You can pre-order breakfast sandwiches, tea and coffee available for a £1 for all day.
Very friendly place and plenty of advice on hand.
Toilet facilities are adequate.
On site tackle shop is well stocked.

A big negative is the awful road to get there. Its a very narrow track with limited passing places.
The pot holes were incredibly bad.
Good job I was in a pick up, no way would I take a normal car down there at the moment.
That said, when leaving, there had been progress made during the morning filling in the potholes and clearing the verges.

Will I go back? Yes, 100%. There are some huge trout in the pools there.
I've got to have another crack at them.
