Bluemoon Angling Thread

I racked up another blank with the pike lures on the canal on Sunday afternoon. I think that’s 8 sessions on the trot without so much as a bite.

We’ve hired a boat and a pub for a two day trip to Esthwaite water again next month. On there I’ve done 8 days and not landed a pike. Honestly, sometimes I wonder why I bother.

Me and a couple of mates have just joined Mirfield AC, West Yorkshire. A good few miles of the middle and lower Calder a couple of lengths of the Aire , plenty of the Aire and Calder Navigation and Huddersfield Canals. Anybody know the venues?

Yes I have fished the Aire & Calder canal quite a bit . Lots of bream May to September on tip and pole . Some brilliant roach catches this winter in the town areas where the roach seem to have migrated, 20lb of redfins not uncommon. River Aire has fished really well last autumn early winter before floods and bad weather again lots of roach . Some pegs are very deep up to 18ft in places .

Thanks for the advice. As soon as our cards arrive we'll be spending a day over there, finding car parks and walking banks getting our bearings. Looking forward to getting onto the banks depending on the weather. :-)

Bolo (15 / 17ft rod) and pole on the river Aire . Roach do come up mid water for loose feed mid match / session. Plenty of cut out pegs but bank can be treacherous in poor weather. Aire and Canal deep ( 8 - 10 ft ) canalised venue , good access and banking/ footpaths. RE river Calder i haven’t fished the venue but shallower than the Aire and plenty of roach dace and chub plus bream in the slower moving pegs . Huddersfield canal is an inigma , match weights generally poor .

Hi mate, just re read your post and you fish it in May correct. No close season? The reason I ask. We fish the Weaver Nav at Frodsham on the Warrington card and below the locks at Vale Royal it's classed as river so closed. Is the A and C classed as a stillwater? Thanks.

Aire & Calder canal is open all year round pal . The river Aire and river Calder obviously closed 15th March to 16th June due to river closed season. All canals in England have no closed season. Yeah Weaver is classed as a river even on the canalised section at Acton etc Runcorn end .
Glad to help :-)

I’m not in Mirfield but I do fish in the area for predators. Happy to help you if I can.
