Bluemoon's Official Top 100 TV Shows

The World at War was made in the early 70s like me! But nearly 50 years on its probably as definitive a WWII documentary as you'll ever find. The sombre tomes of Olivier as narrator with much rare archive footage particularly Germans' home movies interspersed with interviews from many participants from events then about 25 - 30 years ago at that point.

A lot of the footage contained images of the dead military and all too often civilians something which never fails to shock me. It's not perfect due to the scope of the War they couldn't cover all campaigns, the stuff on india was very cursory. However it is the quality of the interviewees which takes it to another level including Hitler's architect Speer as well as top allied leaders. Amongst the talking heads was one American Army Airforce Captain James Stewart who despite being medically unfit enlisted as a pilot. Great man, great actor rather braver than John Wayne!!!

Just to finish off, the orchestral score by Carl Davies sad poignant and utterly epic.

If you've got about 15 hours to spare this is sobering reminder of what freedoms we take for granted.
Only ever seen bits of it. Its available on SKY, and this post has compelled me to watch it in its entrity.

Never got the Sopranos gave up around season 5

Not much seemed to ever happen .......was shag bird see shrink shag bird see shrink and repeat

Out of interest did he ever get to shag the shrink?

Breaking bad without doubt the greatest show for me with Water White being the all time greatest TV show character

how can you quit Sopranos after 5 seasons?! The mind boggles

I can't say I've ever watched 5 seasons of a show I didn't like.
To be honest I stuck with it waiting for it to get better as many people have it as the best show ever

in the end my snide box broke and I didn't go out of my way to find another source to finish sopronos off

Chernobyl my number 1. Couldn't take my eyes off it and the cover up was shocking. As others have said made me wanted to read more about it and the accompanying podcast is great too if you get chance to listen it

Also has world at war. The music is chilling and is head and shoulders above others due to the sheer number of those who lived it

About 6 or 7 so far, but World at War was my mumber one choice, and am sad to see it so low.

Epic, informative, interesting, exciting and with a cast of people who were actually there, from leading politicians to concentration camp survivors, with some fantastic on the spot footage, and narration from Larry Olivier, World at War is a true landmark series. It still keeps me hooked when (often) repeated and I have probably watched it more times than any other tv programme.

One or two of the episodes are heartbreaking/terrifying and awe inspiring, but dealing with a real life historical event, its impact is bound to lessen over time, and can understand peoples preference for more modern fictional drama. For me though, it is the best television ever made, truly epic.

Surprised at the amount of series that have acclaim here that I havnt seen, and some look really interesting. I am guilty of becoming a bit insular with my tv viewing I suppose, and need to catch up.
