Blues in Failsworth

Did a walking pub crawl for my birthday a few years ago. We walked to Nelson tavern up the dirt track coming from droylsden. Then on to the windmill. Then to the very quite eight bells. Then we walked to the willow. That was the end of our walking it was taxis after that to woodhouse gardens. What a way to spend a Saturday afternoon/evening.

Yes, the Woodhouse Gardens - a good pub back in my day. Excellent pint of John Willie Lees. My local in Failsworth was the Pack Horse, near the Pole. A cracking and historical little boozer, now sadly gone. We pass it in on our SC coach on the way to the Etihad and it almost breaks my heart to see it's been converted into offices.

Pack Horse went downhill slowly but surely after long standing tenants, Tom and Lesley Lowe left the place. First thing the brewery did was put a clueless manager in. (Same thing echoed in our local The Robin Hood Inn, Newton Heath) His bright idea, was to put a pool table, smack back in the middle of the lounge. Half the clientele were lost at a stroke, and the scrotes from the Crown & Cushion, Royal Oak etc were attracted.... Spiralled after that. Sad, and the Area Manager who did it, (And to the Robin) wants raping with a pineapple ....

On the plus side, Woodhouse Gardens is still a cracking pint of JWL ... decent food too.

My old man still goes in the Nelson on a Monday night, Mani's dad still does too.

Back in the day, we would go from Newton Heath (I lived on Albert Gardens, off Averill St, last street before it becomes Failsworth) up to The Black Horse, then Mare & Foal, and The Bridge before our favourite pub, The Pack Horse. Clearly we were fans of Marston's beers. Great times.

Wasn’t too far away from you grew up on Farm street. I remember getting my Mexico 86 sticker book from Averill Street News Agents I’m sure there used to be a video shop round there too in the 80s.

The Nelson, do they still have Cobra on tap in there? Bit random considering it’s not a curry house. I used to frequent the Windmill a decade a go, heard it went down hill a bit not to sure what it’s like now.

You see Cobra in a few pubs. I used to drink it in The Firkin opposite Manchester Met Uni. An Indian run pub near me does it too.

Tommy Lowe was a cracking landlord. I knew him well.
He and Lesley moved in during the late 1960's & really moved the pub up a gear. We had some great craic there & some brilliant pub trips during his tenure, both at home and abroad. It really was a 'proper local'. I moved away from the area in 1987 and I later heard the stories about how the subsequent landlord(s) gave it a personality bypass and ruined the place. Hence it's gradual demise. If anyone had said to me 40 years ago that the Church Inn, Royal Oak and the Crown & Cushion would all outlast the Pack Horse I would have laughed in their face.
