BMG v City post match thread

peps got the right tactics, players are now showing more and more each game that they are not up to standard, particularly in getting in position off the ball to create space and a move. Some simple passes are made badly / first touch is not the best at times. Its obvious where we are weak at the back.

Aguero - bad game, not good touches, timing out
Sterling - played like he did last season at times.

KDB / Silva / Gundogan - thank god these are reliable still.

Our defence is left running back all the time which makes opposition attack dangerous. When we attacked BMG had 7 or 8 behind the ball, when they attacked us we where chasing back as we were all pressing up front.

This style of play is fantastic when you have the right players knowing where to be, but at the moment it has a few leaks so we are in a position where we hit a brick wall defence when we attack and then leave ourselves wide open for counter attack. It makes our two defenders look bad when really its what happens around them that lets us down.

Job done and we are through with a game to spare which in September we would have said lovely jubbly...

Burnley next and we know what tactics they play

Nothing wrong with the players - almost any club in the world would die for our squad.
I'm generalising of course - we clearly need to strengthen in certain positions and ongoing improvement is always necessary.
But this is a team that could and should win the Premier league - if we don't we've underachieved again.

Down to the manager to get a tune out of them - and I think he will, eventually.

The Liverpool team that Klopp inherited was generally not considered to be good enough.
There was a feeling that they'd wasted their money on people like Llana.
Now look at them. They have a good manager and they look amazing.

Guardiola is about 9 months behind Klopp.
Last year Liverpool made a great start under Klopp, then were very inconsistent but occasionally brilliant and this year they've improved and added consistency.
I think we are following a similar pattern.

We have a great manager - let's hope he gets it right.
If he doesn't it won't be because he doesn't have the players it will be because he wasn't as good as Klopp / Conte / whoever.

I don't see the reason why Nolito is not being selected regularly. We always put in a good performance when he plays.

Great before the ban and the team playing well with Sterling on the right. Back from ban and doesn't get picked. Is Pep trying to teach him a lesson? Our performances haven't been as good, that's a fact.

There seems no reason why manager's make particular decisions, but we don't know what goes on behind the scenes.

1 game a week its a cake walk as it is for Chelsea.

Gobsmacked by some of the comments on here. We did a job, weren't great but we were a class above BMG and it showed. We sensibly killed the game off after Fernandinho's sending off, wise move given that the ref was taking to booking players for sneezing. One of the biggest accusations against us in Europe in past years is that we have not known how to manage games and get ourselves into situations that require superhuman efforts, and Aguero hat-tricks, to get out of. Last night we were not in any danger of conceding a second, even if our defending at times is haphazard and too reactionary. We even tried to get the winner by creating space out wide -just look at the positions Sagna took up when he came on, specifically to draw players inside and create space - but BMG were too tight and unadventurous to step up. Not our fault, a surprising tactic to just give up on qualification like they did, but not our fault.

We're through we a game to spare, we have qualified comfortably in the end and Pep has only been here half a year. If you can't win then don't lose, something we have struggled with in the past. I would agree that the performances have not shone with regularity, but the signs are there that we can do over any team in this competition. Especially with Gabby Jesus on his way, he is different again to what we have. But more steel needed at the back, all very well to restrict the opposition to one or two shots on goal each match, but if they score with 50% or more of their shots on target then it is a problem. Pep will sort it, and I believe how he will do so is by making us more clinical at the other end, getting two or three in front so heads drop before they have their big chance against us.

With 15 mins to go all I wanted was us to pass it around the back 4 kill the game get our point and move on.

Well said that man and spot on!
Did what we needed to do and comfortably.
Christ knows what some people want on here..

You should never, ever be gobsmacked by the daftness of some comments on the internet. Good post.

Thought the 3 at the back was fine and worked ok, just felt like the tempo in the final third was miles off the pace not sure if thats the manager players or both but it was turned into proper slow build up. Really we should have dominated and been a bit more clinical with Aguero Sterling Gundo KDB and Silva up top. Obviously 3 at the back leaves you a bit exposed to the counter but I never really felt too threatened and besides it was pisspoor defending no matter how many defenders we had on the pitch.

Wasn't the best spectacle but didn't think it was that poor or boring like some of my mates have suggested. Job done and into the next round.

We've not played well for a while now but we did all we needed to last night

Finally, the voice of reason.

Just been looking at the PL table. We're third, having conceded 11 goals. Only Chelski and Tottingham have conceded fewer this season. I wish some people would get a grip of themselves when talking about our "crap" defence. In the last 5 minutes, BMG didn't get a kick because they couldn't get the ball off us. When did you see that last happen? Not by us - ever.

Progress is being made - not as quickly as a lot envisage, but the signs are definitely there.

Patience, children.
