Bond films

If ever a whole franchise of movies have let down the books it’s the Bond movies.
The books sagged and then From Russia With Love kicked the doors in. Some writers have managed to capture Fleming writing for Bond in style, and surprisingly Charlie Higson (The Fast Show) gets closest in tone and chemistry of setting.

I've only read one Bond book, and that was With a Mind to Kill by Anthony Horowitz. Have you read that? And how does it rate alongside Fleming? I like Horowitz as a writer.

yeah, but Fleming is technical at times and brief often. His pace is pretty good. You can whiz through an original Bond novel. They all left me wanting to read more.

Most of the older films, all with Moore, are terrible. They are more spoof than anything else.

Craig has made a better Bond, but the films still lack brilliance.

I agree. A lot of the older ones, and all of Moore’s camp efforts haven’t aged that well.

Craig made the best Bond, and I think Pierce Brosnan would have made a very good one if his later couple of films weren’t let down by terrible plots and writing. Goldeneye is right up there as one of the best ever Bond films, and Tomorrow Never Dies was a really strong film as well.

For me, Skyfall is the best. Followed by Casino Royale.

Some harsh views on Moore's Bond. To me, he plays the quintessential Bond. Charming, good looking and quick witted.

I've been watching a few of the Bond films (For your Eyes only, Never say Never again and one of my favourites A View to a Kill last night) that have been shown on ITV the last few weeks on a Saturday night and I just find them really enjoyable to watch.

In contrast to Moore's Bond who generally seems to be having a good time of things. Craig's Bond is a largely downcast affair that I struggle to enjoy as much. Casino Royale was brilliant and Quantum of Solace was decent as well as a sort of epilogue to CR.

But from Skyfall onwards I struggle to enjoy them as Bond films. It just seems like Bond is living a miserable existence and we're forced to watch him trawl through his next horrible episode.

Going forward I would love to see a rebooted Bond set in the 60s or 70s with a more charismatic actor playing Bond.
