Booking.com taken payment before stay on free cancellation

Hi anyone had trouble with booking.com and free ancellation. I've got free cancellation on a hotel up until midnight tonight, but the hotel took payment this morning. Booking.com says I cans till cancel for free up until midnight but can I gurantee I will get my money back? Anyone had anything like this before?

Yep, did it myself a couple of weeks ago. They take the payment, and then refund it to your card if you cancel during the free cancellation period.

So we're not having that secret night alone now?
 
Yeah its not that unusual - they will refund your card if you've cancelled before the deadline. I had booked one in Spain and they took the payment. I cancelled it a couple of weeks later and in that time the € had got weaker and I ended up getting more money back than they had taken. Obviously that can go the other way.

That is why I posted the reference.
In fact now, if I have a choice I prefer hotel.com
