Was completely unaware of this. I'm absolutely shocked. Bordeaux is a fine city, and the countryside around it is heavenly. Not to mention the beauties of the Atlantic. Nor the food, which is wonderful, and the wines, whose virtues no longer need to be spoken of. And by God are some of the girls lookers…
It so happens I've had business over there a few times. The first time was in 1988. Les Girondins were at that time the pride of the city. They'd won the league twice in the eighties. Jean Tigana, a brilliant midfielder who was one of the architects of the Euro winning side in 1984, was their big man in that decade. Along with Alain Giresse and Bernard Lacombe. Truly, they were a stellar side. Zinedine Zidane of course played for them for much of the nineties. This is not some minor club we're talking about. Their success was all the more surprising in that they bucked the trend of the whole of the south-west, where they're mad about Rugby Union, by and large.
Absolutely staggering.
