Boycott The Lass O'Gowrie Pub

I once went into The Bucket Of Blood boozer in Castleford when the Tigers were on the big screen in a Challenge Cup semi final. When I realised that a particularly poignant Beethoven violin sonata was being broadcast on Sky Arts at the same time I appealed to the better nature of the landlord and the 150 Castleford fans to switch channels to this cultural milestone pointing out how much better for their education and all round humanity it would be. When I was howled down and had beer thrown at me I had to resort to jumping up and down in front of the screen and waving my raincoat about whilst yelling the opening bars of the masterpiece at the top of my voice in order to make common sense prevail. I certainly made my point that day although my elbow replacement still clicks badly in wet weather.

Not surprised you fool! Beethoven was a bleedin' German. Had it been a programme about the sculptor Henry Moore I'm sure they would have been much more agreeable as he is a Castlefordian. A fact, I'm sure, most forum members already know.

But Moore's glory days were at scrum half for Bradford Northern. Cas never saw the best of him.

Seems much ado about nothing after reading the owner's reply.

Yep.

I suppose the elephant in the room really, and what makes us all a bit oversensitive about these things, is the feeling that, if United were playing on telly, all the screens would be showing the game, we'd have stereo sound, and the pub would be full of be-shirted, braying half-wits...

Irrational or not...

It was one of our work locals when I was based around that way. Some regular custom at Lunchtime and sometimes in the evening for Football. Haven't been in there for a little while but I always liked the place. No more, though.

Upset one you upset us all.

?

Wasn't talking about this specific incident, just commenting on why we get a bit (over) sensitive about these things; the feeling that, if United were on, there'd be no trouble with getting the game on telly...

Lass O Gowrie? Great pub and good replies from the Landlord.

Just make sure no one hears you say you hate City again ok. ;~)

However your Spurs loving partner needs an education. As for Blackburn? The Ewood has closed down....why don't you both buy it?

I might come in and try your REAL chips.

I can't believe people (City fans) don't know where the Lass is.....

It's been in Manchester a LONG time. Most students know it due to its location.

I must admit I go to most games so rarely watch on telly and if I do miss away games I watch at Reddish Blues.

Sorry - took it the wrong way ;-)

You're quite right about being oversensitive about some things. There's a few on here seem to think that every non-City man and his dog are against us or that everybody else should accomodate City fans no matter what.

It says something that there were only three City fans in - and it wasn't because there was a lot at the game! There wouldn't be a problem getting a rag game on as there would be quite a few rags to watch it - probably students who wouldn't know what Old Troughford was never mind how to get there, but still paying customers non the less. We simply often don't attract customers in the same numbers.

My local (near Bolton) has just given up showing the Italian Sky City games on Saturday as there were usually about four or five in to watch it. The rag or Bolton games got twenty or thirty. Despite what many people seem to think, City aren't a big name just yet. One of the pubs in Bolton said that they were always busy for the rags and Bolton on Sky but very few in for the City games.

I have had no problem for the lass and if I was still in Manchester I'd still be going. Fair play to the landlord of the place for posting.

One of the reasons it gets a bigger rag crowd is because its right off oxford road therefore filled with rag students.

I would go there to watch football in general, not specifically City as I'd go to the match or watch it in another pub with mates, but they were good enough to show irish premier league games when they were on sky when no one else would so thumbs up for me. Always had a good time in the place.

My only problem was the price of the drink!
