Was the last lessening of a sentence the removal of the death penalty?
Strictly speaking no. Common law offences carry maximum sentences of life imprisonment, but when they are subsequently mandated in statute they are subject to statutory maximum sentences that are almost invariably less.

I think the Fraud Act 2006 was an example of this.
 
Have a read of my local paper every week. It’s unbelievable how lenient sentences are nowadays. This government has completely messed this country up. Never felt so disillusioned about the UK and where it is heading.

Bare in mind that newspapers are much more likely to report or give prominence to cases where they think the public might, on the face of it, deem the sentence to be lenient.

Fact is, the average sentence, covering all sentences, has more than doubled since the start of this century.
