Those who are "unconvinced by Mahrez" will be the same who were unconvinced by David Silva when he arrived. All new players need time and frankly, Riyad has done reasonably well, especially in goals and assists.

The balance is tricky, but if you recruit world-class talent, from other clubs, who have no affinity with City, you run the risk of them leaving if their ambition lies beyond the opportunity that we are willing to offer. I would urge all those firm in their belief that we have got it wrong to remember that these guys are 17-19 years of age, and seeking a starting position in the champions of England, who are the first team in Premier League history to reach 100 points. That's an awful lot of belief in your ability, and perhaps a lack of patience too.

Just like with Sancho, people will look at £15m and get giddy over how great a job we've done. £15M!! For a kid! Amazing.

Then in 2 years time when he's worth 5x that after Madrid send him on a good loan and then bring him into their first team they'll say "Ah there was nothing we could have done to keep him! Lad wanted to leave for some reason".

Meanwhile more kids like him won't get a chance and will run down their contracts like he did because they have zero faith in the club bringing them through.

We've seen it before, no doubt we'll see it plenty of times again.

Well said

Shirley he won't go on loan because he refused to go on loan this season with us.

All of this is correct and £15m plus add ons is still an excellent deal with six months on that contract. Both of those things can be and are true.

And then there was Sturridge. Still a youth team player but was he ever going to sign a new contract with us? As we know, he wouldn't, and being advised by his own footballing family he then plumped for the even bigger spenders at Chelsea. Well his career might have been OK but it hasn't been anywhere near being special and deep down he probably regrets walking out on us for what was supposedly a youth development compensatory fee. Turning to Diaz and Sancho, if neither were prepared to sign up and to buckle down and learn from Pep then there was never any option other than getting whatever City could get in the market for them.

The fickle nature of the modern day football fan is very frustrating at times. On one thread there are dozens calling out 21 year old Jesus for his dip in form and on another thread Pep is being berated for not giving youth a go... I don't remember an attacking player joining us under Pep who has hit the ground running so far. Mahrez will come good

Is Diaz better than our first team options, or likely to be in the next two to three years, given that he is not going to get a run of games to showcase his talents? The answer is probably no, so the club has got a decent fee and will move on, just like Diaz.
Not just that, it's about tactics as well. Diaz is very much a no 10, he doesn't have the pace and agility to do a job for the wing on us, the physicality to play up front or the mindset to drop deeper and make the play. So even when there's an opportunity to play a kid, he won't be the first name to pop into Guardiola's head.

Foden and Diaz have been battling each other for that first team opportunity for the past few years, and Phil has won the race.

Receiving a wonderful transfer deal/package for the runner up who would never have got a sniff here is a job brilliantly done.
