Breaking records/stats thread

Genuinely reckon we should have a tactical 3rd place group stage exit some time in the next few years and give the europa league a go
I think that option disappears next season with the new CL format.
Top eight in the 36 team league go through, 9-16 and 17-24 play off for a place in the knock-out rounds but I've not read that the losers go into the Thursday League.

I definitely think that would’ve been a good option a few years back.

This week I was asked by someone preparing stats for NUFC’s return to Europe about City’s European record. It’s for a NUFC related publication/article and they’re trying to do comparisons between the English clubs (my guess is to try and say NUFC have a better Euro history than most, but they don’t!). They asked for a complete MCFC Euro breakdown ‘including the Fairs Cup and Intertoto’ - I wanted to reply ‘City have not finished that low’ (of course we have but the Intertoto was a bit like the Full Members unless you progressed to latter stages and the Fairs Cup wasn’t a UEFA tournament though it was important when NUFC won it).

I think winning European trophies - ANY trophy - is there forever in the record books and so winning the odd Europa League a few years back would possibly have helped City‘s profile a bit, afterall Utd/LFC /CFC etc talk about European trophies they’ve won often, not just European Cups.

My aim though would be to win as many CL as we can in next few years to put to shame the records of the others if we can - tall order but imagine how it would be if City had won more CLs than you know who by the end of the decade.

Yeh, let’s wait until we get a bit “shit’r” (like United now) before ‘focussing’ on the Europa. Easier to think about when we’re on the way down, performance wise, rather than now when we’re at(near) the top of our game.

So, the team that finishes 24th could knock the team that finished 9th out?

I was thinking on the way up a few years back. Absolutely not now and not on the way down.

The difference in money between the two competitions is huge. The main incentive with the Europa is to win it and get into the CL by the back door. We have never won the Europa Conference either!

Wasn't the Fairs Cup some sort of invitational thing?

Success in Europe is more highly rated by clubs on the continent but ultimately would you want to be Sevilla and win the Europa League consistently or Real Madrid and win the CL. No one really cares about the other competitions unless they're not in the CL. Whilst it might be good to say "we've won every European trophy available" I'd rather say "we've got more CL titles than you".

The rags only have 3 in their long history in the competition. Now the monkey is off our back we have to go and win it again and again. Pep rightly said plenty have just one, it's about consistently winning it. That's the motivation the players need to have. Go and win it again and again, taste that success frequently. We've added Kovacic who has 4 even if he hasn't been a major part of those sides, that will drive the team. Let's go and at least tie things up with the rags whilst Pep is here!

I definitely thought about the Europa in our early days in the CL - help us make that steady progression and take some of the pressure off. But I don't think about that level anymore. It's only really talked about more because the rags and dippers have been in it, so the media here try to make it a bigger thing than it really is.

Initially but qualification too. I explain some of the weird stuff about it here:

Best (most dominant) teams of all time. Our rating is now so high that it’s difficult to earn more than 2 elo points for a win, a draw would drop us by about 8 points and a defeat would be about a 15 point drop. Only PL and European matches count. We can also win/lose points from how other PL clubs fair in Europe (about 27% of their match total elo points) Can we catch any of the top three before our run ends? Beating Forest, Wolves and Leipzig would probably get us 3rd.

p.s. Pep looks to be the difference. He can’t leave until we are No 1….it’s only fair or he has short changed us ;-)

p.p.s We would be third now had we avoided defeat to Brentford and second had we beaten them.
Brighton's loss to Athens single handedly cratered City's rating by 8 points

Brighton and Villa lost a combined 30 Elo points for their performances last night and so 9 points were also passed onto us and everyone else in the PL as part of being in the PL recalibration. So Brighton had help from Villa.

It’s been a while since we took a hit like that. Probably down to little European experience with those two teams.

It works both ways and we could do with the PL teams improving from a rating point of view.

I prefer it when we don't start well and I write off the season by November/December. :)

Next 4 PL games; Wolves (A), Arsenal (A), Brighton (H) and utd (A). Can we break the record. The trip to Arsenal without Rodri will be tricky.

Obviously it will, but we might have Kovacic (remember him), Bernardo, and Stones back by then, all significant to help replace Rodri, lets not panic yet, and they might lose to spurs tomorrow (though a draw would be better in both cases).
It would be great to have Stones back for Arsenal but it seems very unlikely... Last time he played was community shield and there has been no news about even returning to training...
