'Breakthrough in nuclear fusion'

Some transient bunch of soap dodgers will protest it even if it's clean and very cheap, although I can't see govt giving the public anything cheap they'd sell the rights to their pals who would milk us until hell freezes over.

It will be weaponised Iron Man style, about 10 years after they clone a Mammoth.

I find all this absolutely fucking fascinating though.
I went down an 'Atom' rabbit hole a few weeks back, just to try and full understand the elemental make up of atoms in general. How they're built, the shells of electrons that build up the different atomic structures.

When you 'look' at things at the Planck scale it's just extraordinary (the line that if you blew an atom up to the size if the observable universe something at the Plack scale would be around the size of a tree....)

They're as empty as Cruella Braverman's soul yet the whole universe is entirely constructed of them.

And this entire universe popped out from a sub atomic seed (with the same energy contained in that dot as the universe contains today). I'm calling magic.

Then I get cynical and think if this energy solution is cracked it will still be heavily monetised....nothing is ever free is it?

This is why most people just Google porn

First time net energy gain has been made from a fusion reaction.

That's a pretty big step forward.
Yes that's the step, more power out, than put in, for the 1st time.
Perpetual energy producing, powered by self (with fuel supply needed) would be the final far far into the future goal.

Excuse me if I don’t get excited.

“Just now, Dr Marv Adams was holding up the cylindrical target containing the “peppercorn-sized” pellet of fusion fuel.

He confirmed they had achieved “ignition” of a fusion reaction.

He also revealed the scientists put about 2MJ of energy into their fusion reaction and got about 3MJ out.

That’s the evidence of the “energy gain” that this announcement is all about.

That’s the significant scientific milestone: proving a fusion reaction itself can generate more energy than you put into in.

But they had to use 300MJ of electricity to power up their lasers.

So from an energy production point of view, they're still having to put in 99% more power into the machine as a whole as they are getting out.”

If this comes off City's oil-rich owners will have all that, er - sand.
