Lancashire Heeler - wonderful breed, always had Jack Russells before but got one of these and found the best friend the family ever had
I wanted something bigger after having terriers most of my life, but good shout. I think the thing is take time, see the pup you like quite a few times to get to know it, it's owners upbringing etc. I went to see Vinnie 3 times and spent time with him. Could tell his nature. He's got a good pedigree but to spotty to show, which is fine by me I wanted a pet. Until I met him I was buying a black lab

We had to have our west highland terrier put down a couple of weeks ago due to cancer, the question I am asking is what breed would you recommend as a good family pet ?
We don't want to get another westie as he had quite a few problems ie skin.
Also need to take into consideration that I have a 4 year daughter I don't want bitten.

For sturdiness you want a mongrel. All pedigree breeds have inherent problems due to the fuckin kennel club.

Agree with stonerblue on this. E.g. labradors are prone to hip problems; cavaliers = hearts and eyes, pugs and boxers = breathing problems, dachshunds = backs, etc. For evidence you'll find cross-breed insurance premiums are the cheapest and insurers aren't generally the most sentimental people.

Lifestyle is important too. Don't get a breed that needs lots of stimulation (e.g. springer, collie) unless you can give it an active and interesting life.

Whichever dog you get please consider a rescue dog. There are loads of them needing homes.

-- Sun Feb 03, 2013 9:44 pm --

Whichever dog you get please consider a rescue dog. There are loads of them needing homes.

Well I would stick with the Westie - skin management is actually really easy once you get on top of it - we've got a 5yr old one, he had a bad spell with his ears at about two years old which took us about 6 weeks to crack and he's been fine ever since

-- Sun Feb 03, 2013 8:49 pm --

I had one of those as a kid, great dog, cried buckets when we lost him - but I've never seen one in the flesh for 30 years since...

Lovely dogs but that smoking habit will cost you a small fortune

Re: Breed of dog

I've got a 6 month old springer, Colin, and although he's potty he's a lovely natured dog and so gentle around my 5 month old daughter. Love the barm pot to bits and couldn't imagine life without him!
