The Performance of World Champions

How the hell did we manage to go a goal down to a typical ManUre, Wimbledon or Stoke City type hoofball up the middle? No arguments about the goal. Toney stronged Aké out the way to make the space, & Maupay dispatched the attempt with aplomb.

I was getting a feeling of foreboding with the amount of chances we were racking up on the very day their keeper decides to have the game of his life!

Toward the end of the half, I had a feeling we'd score a late equaliser & an early second half goal as we're seemingly doing at the moment, & so it proved. Foden strode forward after a tight, scrappy buildup, & in a packed box he managed to stab the ball home for the equaliser.

I could see from minute one that Brentford's tactic was a ball over the top to catch us on the break, & they rarely broke from this plan until the last kick. Hence why it was such a relief when Phil stooped in with a flicked header to give us a well deserved lead just after half-time.

Brentford kept toiling away & posing a long-ball threat throughout the match, but we managed it brilliantly.

I thought Walker had his best match in months. KDB looks like his fitness is getting back up there, & his clip in to Phil for his goal & KDB's assist was a thing of beauty.

Aké was a rock at the back & Gvardiol had one of his better games, but still doesn't offer enough threat going forward for a left back. It's a position I'm desperate for us to address in the summer.

Phil's third for his hat-trick was an exemplary display of control on the run. He latched on to Haaland's lay off, kept control & dispatched the ball past the keeper & into the corner for effectively the winner.

Over all we remained calm & kept our heads after undeservedly going a goal down. This was a game we had to win against a very tough & resilient Brentford.

We played brilliantly, & even then we got less than we deserved. We've applied the pressure back on the Dippers & ArseAnal, so it's a case of who blinks first as none of us can afford to lose ATM.

Forward we march!

Fits in with the pattern of many recent games against opposition sitting deep and waiting for the inevitable breakaway.. We look so threatening and then concede the first chance the opposition get. Usually a sucker punch behind our flat back 4 easily turned when too high up the pitch.
We rely on individual pieces of great skill to get back in the game but still look vulnerable whenever we are pressed back.
Good 3 points plenty of fight .

There was no questioning of the Branthwaite equaliser on Saturday, seemingly non of the experts picked up on IFAB law 11 which is along the lines of “if a player is in an offside position and an opposition player makes an attempt at the ball then the attacking player has no advantage so it’s not offside”.

In the Everton v Spuds game the Spuds player heads the ball, deemed a deliberate attempt and the ball is headed in by Branthwaite who was possibly initially in an offside position. VAR checked for quite a while, they shouldn’t have because the Spuds player headed the ball, at that moment the offside was irrelevant but the Var and commentators didn’t pick up on it and the check went on for a while.

So fuck of Carragher if professionals can’t interpret that ruke why take Phil to task you sneaky ****? Your media colleagues and referees weren’t even questioned over it.
