Brentford (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

The Bullshit Broadcasting Canutes label today’s win as a ‘scrape’! They can’t have looked at the stats or just looked at the one goal that cleans out the pot with all three points. Had we had a red shirt they would have labelled it as ‘grinding out a win’ or ‘It’s what champions do’! Bastards!
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Not greatest second half I think it’s fair to say but fantastic defending. Donnarumma has tightened us up and to go away at a hard ground and leave with a win got to be happy. Savinho still got long way to go for me and looked better with Doku. I thought Gonzalez was decent again - nothing spectacular but has a decent turn and held his own in the middle. Thought subs helped secure the win and just need get some more bodies back. We have lost Kdb and ballon d’or winner in twelve months and are still holding our own.
After that ready for international break!

Please, do us a favour and nobody claim "that's what champions do"....
Great 1st half but again, a 2nd half with nothing offered upfront.
Savinho has a dreadful mentality, weak, more intent on claiming non-existent fouls than getting on with the game
Good from O'Reilly, Nunes, Dias, GK and Big Erl
Need a lot more from midfield to really challenge for the title
Red scouse looked like this last and this season

Did you miss me saying he's a great shot stopper, or did you ignore it? My reply was specifically to OP regarding how much we're struggling to play it out from the back and through opposition presses.
You said you didn’t understand the thinking, and I’ve just shown you what the thinking is.

Very similar to the Brighton game but the coin fell on our side this time. Don’t love it but that’s probably where we are right now as a team.

I was going to say you got to be kidding after that second half performance. But the league is so poor this season, it literally could be anyone’s.
Could this be another Leicester season for a team not in Europe????
I don't see a stand out currently, which is a little surprising given some of the spending involved

We also have a goalkeeper who's poor with the ball at his feet. I understand he's a great shot stopper, but I don't understand the thinking of the club going from one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers of all time to one who's very uncomfortable with the ball at his feet. Especially when playing from the back is the 'DNA' of the club at every level, from under 8's to the senior team, men and women. Why not emulate PSG's approach to replacing Donnarumma and find a middle ground between shot-stopping and ball-playing? Oh, well. Too late now to question it, I suppose.
Well apart from Ederson who didn't want to play for us anymore, comfortable ball playing goalies are rarer than rocking horse shit. So might as well go for one of the best shot stoppers in the business as a consolation prize.

In terms of hard work it was OK. I'd give the team that. They work for each other in defense.

But there is no class up front and Pep's style of play makes that even worse.

I don't know how you think that we should have been up by more in the first half. We had 2 or 3 decent chances as far as I remember but not many.

When we used to play well we'd have loads of decent chances because we were fast, dynamic, intelligent, creative, positive, etc.

We are what we are at the moment (not very exciting) but I'm not going to pretend we are great just because we win or that we are dire because we lose.
we limited Brentford at home to nothing. To nothing. Thats crazy good. And then we have Foden's 2/3 chances, including almost sitter, Reijnders great air shot and another attempt + few really dangerous Bobb's plays.

Its been absolutely top half at this level.

Too many lightweight midfielders/forwards at the moment when we're under the cosh, and need to protect the ball.

Savinho and Bobb can't shield the ball or draw fouls, they just get barged out of the way. Or shoved to the ground. Both need more aggression in their game.

I thought Doku would be an effective change but he lost the ball every single time.

Apart from that an important win. Gvardiol had a poor 45 too.

Although we were disjointed in the second half, they didn't create anything outside of the one on one at the start of the second half. (Which I’m convinced was a foul on Gvardiol. It’s a tip tackle. Shithouse of a challenge)

We defended the long throws really well, we just didn’t pass the ball well.

I can handle George Grahaming our way to another title!
Donnarumma showed his class on that chance. His stature (in all senses) is immense. Probably not a coincidence that Ruben has looked back to his best recently.

You’re right regarding the long throws, a bit like Arsenal we looked comfortable but it’s nerve shredding at the time as they are a real weapon for them.

The second half drop offs worry me. Fitness? Pre Season. But we ar 3 points off. My main worry is Arsenal who look pretty determined and good. Just hoping they will drop off. We got a nil defensibly which is good.

I don’t think it’s worth worrying about what other teams are doing at the moment. We look miles off it to me when compared to other seasons but we will get better I’m sure. Having said that, I don’t personally think this squad is strong enough to win the title this season but when we have Haaland in the team, anything is possible.
