Brentford (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Arsenal - they have the best defensive structure and patterns, but also struggle to break down teams that sit deep. What makes them a better team then us and Pool is their fitness levels, midfield depth and set-piece routines, thier downfall is they have an average striker that probably won't score 10 epl goals a season and an over-reliance on Saka.
They also have arteta, I just see him as a liability.

We're definitely getting there lads, not too say we'll ever get back to our imperious best like our previous squads, but I'm seeing some positives this season. We're seeing some great 1st half's at least :-) would be nice to get two or three goals up and then control/see the game out.....be good for our heart rates! Last season we'd have lost this, Monaco and the arse game so we are slowly heading in the right direction. I'm dead happy with leaving with 3 points!
What's that now, 6 unbeaten after losing 2 in 3 early in the season? Little footsteps....

All 3 Top teams have serious issues.

City - Tactically the worse of the 3, high back line system with no defenders (except AK) to compliment it, weak midfield that doesn't win duels, protect the backline or create enough chances. Long term injuries to Haaland or Rodri and we're in trouble.

Liverpool - Went from tactically sound and robust in midfield to a team that's similiar to ours, trying to pass teams to death with slow build ups and no creativity.

Arsenal - they have the best defensive structure and patterns, but also struggle to break down teams that sit deep. I think you're about right with that, I suspect this season could be one where someone wins the league as no one else wanted to win it! :)

I think we're a team still hammered with injuries and we're also adapting our style of play to add in a more direct option - see the goal today. I think once we've cracked it then we will create a lot more chances. I agree on our defence though and we need someone with some pace in the middle (Guehi?).

I do think that Liverpool have had a bad week, but they have a good manager, system and squad. They shouldn't be underestimated and I wouldn't be surprised to see them rack up a list of wins after this blip.

Arsenal are a funny one, they have a good first XI and Gyokeres at least looks dangerous and normally 3 in 7 wouldn't be too bad for a new striker in a new league, but compared to Haaland it looks hopeless! I think the manager is the one holding them back.

The 1st half was very easy, 3 years ago we’d have ran up 3 goals and ended the game.

We have a real problem with coming out in the 2nd half after we find the 1st half easy and coasting, which allows the opposition to drag themselves back into the game.

We lost our composure in the 2nd half completely. The only player putting his foot on it and trying to carry past players pressing was Nico Gonzalez, but he’d then have no one showing for the pass and it’d often break down.

Donnarumma, Nunes and Dias as 3 of the back 5 really limits our ability to play out from the back, then when we do go long it’s because we’re rushed and it goes to no one. It reminds me of when we first started doing it in Peps first season with Bravo in goal. At least now we do just get rid more often if it’s getting tight being pressed.

The biggest problem we face is everybody is looking for perfection and over-analysing everything. You'll never find it. EVERY team will be worse off if they have an injury to one or two key players, that's just the way it is not a "serious issue". If we haven't learnt that from last season there's something wrong

Liverpool got lucky last season in that they had no serious challengers, Arsenal weren't up to the task again and we had too many long term injuries to hope to compete. They only finished with 84 points, that's 30 points dropped and it wouldn't have been enough to get past us in any of our last 6 title winning seasons. Now he's got some serious competition as both we and Arsenal have improved and things aren't quite going their way now Arne Slot looks a little lost to me, he's not sure what to do.

Arsenal dropped 40 points and although they have bought well and continue to improve a little, so have we and I think we have the better squad overall. They still have the same kick and rush style, they're a one trick pony who don't know what to do when the going gets tough and although I see them as our closest challenger again, that IS what I see, they're still challenging us, not the other way around.

It was great to see Erl so relaxed and happy in his on-pitch post-match interview.

Clearly enjoying himself - and obvious that when you're producing the goods yourself, it is possible to show your dissatisfaction with your teammates and not cause any dressing-room split.

Also brilliant to hear him talking about Delap 'at Stoke 15 years ago' - I wonder how many of the other genuine superstars in the PL have even heard of Rory Delap?

I see a lot saying how good we were in the first half, well as a counter to that, I'd say look at how dreadful brentford were in that first half, we were able to pass the ball around at ease, because bentford were hopeless, barely attempted a tackle, at one point it said we had a 95% pass completion rate, but that's easy if there is no competition. The pundits were full of praise of course, but they are just idiots talking shite, one thing they never mentioned was our lack of quality in front of goal, the only significant other chance we could have scored from was Reijnders well saved shot, in that sort of superiority you need to press the advantage, and we didn't. For the kind of superiority we had, we should be going in 3 or 4 up, had we done that, I'd have agreed it was a good half.

Second half they were always going to better, and had been told to get in our faces, they did, and we wilted, some players pretty much vanished like Reijnders, Bobb and Savinho, who had decent first halves, Foden too, Gvardiol had a pretty poor 20 minutes, but did improve again in the last 20 minutes.

The plus points are that we won, kept a clean sheet (kept brentfords chances to a minimum), and hopefully the injury to Rodri is minimal (and to be expected after such a long lay off). We also seem to have more of our players at home during an international break than normal.

Always happy with a 1-0 win, but I am interested in what's the current plan in games, it feels like we get an early goal and then half attempt to get another 1 or 2 in the first half while also not fully going for it, only to then just play timid in the second half.

I know today we played well enough to not really give brentford anything, but you still leave yourself open to the chance of something stupid happening (see monaco) when it felt like today if the players really wanted too, they could of had the game done by half time.

Agree with you.

I think Anfield is a BIG factor for Pool. No matter how bad they are, they'll always win at thier ground. Mentally they're just not there atm. They've lost a teammate and have a new system, i dont particular rate thier manager, he won the league last season with Klopps team.

I Like Guehi but he's highly sought after now.

There's someone in the top picture who is the son of ex physics teacher of mine. His dad used to give me loads of grief when we lost but was always at Maine Road; Platt Lane, then Kippax.
We played Coventry in an afternoon game during some power cuts (1973-74?) and he told the headmaster plenty of boys would play truant to go to the game and he "volunteered" to stand at the ground and spot them.
