Brentford (H) | Post-Match Thread

The simple truth is we can't defend, we rely on maximising the possession to reduce the opposition chances to score, but defensively we are that poor and have been for some time the opposition only n need a few chances and they can always score

Today was poor

6 - 7 years ago we played with far more energy and as each season goes by we get progressively slower and slower and slower such that much of our play is at walking pace

We don't need any more attacking / creative midfield players we just need defenders that can defend

We will ultimately end up disappearing up own arse playing lovely football but ultimately underperforming - we have had Wegner Ball and now we have Gaurdiola Ball

The performance today was very lethargic and lacking energy. One other issue we have in the side certainly out wide is the lack of pace, our play today was very slow and predictable and I would love to see a pacy winger in the side. I would like to see Borges given a chance, start him on the bench but give him 15 to 20 mins towards the end of the game and see how he gets on. I know he is very raw, but he has a turn of pace and it would be good to see how he gets on.

Arsenal will not continue at the current pace. They still have to play us twice, which I’m sure they are dreading, as well as Tottenham, Liverpool, Brighton and Newcastle away. They also have several hard matches at home, including Newcastle and Chelsea again. Those will all be very tough, and I think that our Newcastle result away may look very nice at the end of the season. Arsenal will have a few stumbles along the way, as well. My expectation is that our season will come down to how we perform against Arsenal. Win one and tie one, and I think we take the table still.

Wish I had your confidence.

It's not just the pace of individual players though is it? It's the pace with which we move the ball forwards. At times we spend eons moving the ball from side to side with the centre backs before passing it back to Eddie and the whole process begins again. Even when presented with opportunity of a break we do this. It is easy for teams to all get back and set up like this, they don't even have to be particularly athletic.
Exactly this mate. Was saying it myself in the stadium and on the bus home to whoever would listen. On the break is when the game opens up and too often we slow it right down. I like Rodri but sometimes he holds on to the ball far too long and stalls our attack. Often turning to face his own goal or playing it back to the defenders. He's not the only one guilty of this but he sees so much of the ball its more noticeable from him. Take it on the half turn and get the thing forward early.
Nothing more irritating than getting to their 18 yard box and we've given them the time to organise 10 men behind the ball. We then proceed to pass it around their 18 yard box for a few minutes without penatratiting before putting an awful cross in and it comes to nothing...again.
We got bullied today. I can take somebody being shit in the air but at least compete for the ball and make it difficult. Lack a bit of nastiness in the team I think.

In my opinion its nothing to do with the pace of the players, but the pace of the football. The reason we end up playing against 9 defenders is we don't make runs behind and if we do they don't get the ball so the runs don't happen infinitum
