apart from the ludicrous assertion that colin schindler was 'always a devoted city fan' he makes a fool of himself by suggesting that city 1968 championship winning side was full of mancunians when in fact neil young was the only manc in it. alan oakes, like his cousin glyn pardoe, was from winsford and mike doyle was from stockport.

Plus Tony Book (Bath),Heslop (Geordie), Summerbee (Preson was it), Bell (Geordie),Lee (Bolton) and a full Scouser Coleman !! Can`t remember where Ken Mulhearn was born.

Wonder if he wrote about the Arsenal invincibles season as having nothing to do with North London?

And the fact that Arsenal havn`t won a trophy for 7 seasons is it now ??

And of course, there are loads of Londoners in the Arsenal team.

Wotcha talking about? They serve jellied eels to the team at alf time and the club song is... I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts.

Wasn't he on one of those 90's UK Italian football programmes on a regular basis, we used to laugh at him as he recounted another of his tedious tales of quaffing some fine wine and having lunch with Signor De Tossi at the "trattoria".....basically, a pretentious old lush

Another dying old man fighting against the dark.

Stuck in the 60's he's failed to adapt to the modern game like so many of his contemporaries. They confuse the times when they were happy as being the best times. I do the same myself. I wistfully remember the great times I had following City, and then realise that they were great times for me, not necessarily City!

The mind plays tricks as you get older, the summers were warmer, the snow always fell on Christmas Day, the football was somehow nobler, more pure, and better than it is now.

All bollocks of course.

Football has pretty much always been bought and paid for since the abolition of the maximum wage in the early 60's.

Is Glanville and his ilk suggesting we go back to those days?

Like I say, these opinions say more about the writers than it does about football nowadays.

I wish I could've put it better but, well, I can't. Good post.

I have been reading WS on and off for 10 years and have never rated Glanville's column. I don't really rate any of the columnists to be honest.

It's a good magazine but don't take it to heart I think sometimes they see themselves as trying to correct all is bad about the beautiful game.

-- Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:49 am --

He's so insightful isn't he? Nothing to do with going out and playing the 38 games and coming back against the media's wankfest team who always come good after Christmas.

I imagine he was sat there blubbering when Aguero scored.

It's interesting how Glanville portrays City as the example of all that is wrong with the modern game, yet his beloved Arsenal, with season tickets in excess of £1000 and relentless pillaging of other club's academies, are held up as bastions of old school virtues.
