Brighton & Hove Albion Thread - 2022/23

I like Potter, Brighton have some good players and barring any major disasters in terms of injuries etc. they should have a top-half finish firmly in their sights, and depending how the season pans out they should have half an eye on a push for Europe.

In terms of Potter's next job...

I think (hope!) Pep will be in situ for a while yet. Klopp too.

United is a poison chalice right now, if they sack Ten Hag in the next season or two that's even further proof.

Arsenal have shown a lot of patience with Arteta, he seems to be slowly coming good and if he can get that promising young squad challenging for the top 4 they'll stick with him.

Conte's early in his Spurs career and doing well, but then he never stays anywhere for long and his current contract runs out next summer. He may well extend but even if so, probably not for more than one or maybe two seasons. Especially if he can break their trophy drought, taking over from him might be an appealing prospect.

The new Chelsea owner's an unknown quantity and I think if he made any rash moves on Tuchel that'd be a red flag in terms of how a manager can expect to be treated.

Other than them, where else would be a genuine step up?

West Ham? Doing pretty well and seem happy with Moyes.

Leicester, perhaps, but they feel at risk of a little slide down the table - if I'm Potter I'd rather lead Brighton to overtake them than jump ship and try to improve Leicester.

And maybe Newcastle, given their new funds, but right now their success is hypothetical, assumed to be on the way because of the money, so it'd be a risk. And Howe seems to be doing a pretty good job.

If I'm Potter I'm in no hurry to push for an exit from Brighton. One of those jobs will become available at a club that's set up decently and appeals to him. Might be 1 year, might be 3, probably won't be more. He just needs to keep Brighton improving and they'll come calling eventually.

The likes of Everton and Villa shouldn't be appealing enough for him to jump ship.
Are Everton and Villa a step up for him at this moment. I know both are bigger clubs and have more history than Brighton but im sure the fans would expect instant success. Will have the same backing he has a Brighton abd are either of them better run than us. Maybe LCFC.

What I like about them is, normally when a team does well the Big 6 start to circle and snap up their best players (Leicester/Kante 2016) but this summer they have sold Bissuoma & Cucurella plus Dan Burn in January and have just replaced them and carry on regardless with the same results.

Potterball: how would you describe his style? I was trying to say something clever but in the end thought better of it. Thinking BHA were not so worried about losing Ben White and Dan Burn as they were not first choices, Cucurella has now been replaced, and The Albion have so far resisted overtures for better players: Dunk, Trossard, Webster, Gross. There is a recognisable problem keeping good fringe players happy and retaining strength in depth with up to seven players out at some stage in the season even without European football. I don't think they have the strength in depth? Unknown quality of youngsters. How many Brighton players would get in the City top 18?

That’s what I was getting at :)

This is a sign their progress comes from a good manager effectively implementing a workable system, rather than a group of outstanding players (not intended as an insult to the players).

First of all, will a top 6 team come in for Potter if they sack their manager, i doubt it, they will more than likely go for a big name. Villa fans on there message board think that he would have no hesitation of walking out on us for them, this i dont think will happen. Potter loves the fact that he gets on so well with the board here and i think he will want to finish off the project, however what is the ceiling of that project, a European place, maybe a cup final. He has time on his side with Brighton, he wont get that at other clubs.

I remember when Brighton sacked Houghton a lot of fans were saying about how mad we were in doing it, however getting Potter in in seems to be a good decision by Bloom. Remember we also gave him an extension to his contract after a few months which again the media thought we were mad to do so,so this now looks like a master stroke by Bloom.
The biggest waste of Potters talent would be the England job.

Is Potter more of a strategist or tactician?

I don't expect anything other than an approach by a top 6 club to register a thought, except perhaps Newcastle? BHA have a shortlist of players that they could not sign because of FFP and financial constraints, although many were pre-Potter.

Brighton have been a breath of fresh air this season. Be a shame to see Potter go but that’s the food chain for you.
Just hope they can maintain their progress somehow.
They have a very good structure and recruitment operation in place. They now need to find a replacement for Potter who will maintain that steady growth. Not easy to do...but not impossible either.

Just popped on a Brighton forum and many of them want Brendan Rodgers or Emma Hayes (bit of a leftfield one that)

Emma Hayes would be a hell of PR move for the club. Recruiting the world's first female manager for a PL club would generate huge global coverage. It would carry a lot of risks but also some amazing commercial opportunities. She is clearly world class in the women's game and she comes across as a very smart tactical pundit on TV. Mind you Tony Bloom is a legendary gambler so you never know!
