When I was learning to be a Flight instructor, we learn there are 4 levels of learning: Rote, Understanding, Acceptance, Correlation.
For me, those 4 levels separate people out of the herd.
The Rote guy does what he is told. He learns how to do something and does it...nothing more, nothing less!
The Understanding guy knows the rote stuff and understands how it works and is able to manage the rote guys. Your lower level mgmt or supervisor guy, who did OK at the local
Comprehensive, and is "one of the guys."
Then there is the Acceptance guy. He learns rote, developed understanding and has learned both to BE accepted and accepted the way things work, and uses that to his advantage to get ahead. He accepts that he has a better understanding and uses that knowledge to leverage and outmaneuver those around him. He's not quite the apex predator, though, because that guy is....
The Correlator! He so earned the rote stuff, but quickly realized that was just information, facts and figures and is the bare basics to get ahead. He understands how it works and accepts that there are ways to do things that will trump the rote learner, because he understands how to put things together. He can take DISPARATE pieces of data, and uses them to build a bigger knowledge database that TIES THINGS TOGETHER. He is the macro-guy, the big picture guy, the guy who gets it and can tie it all together with everything else he knows. THAT GUY can master his domain, because only he knows everything within his domain, because the world is his oyster. He knows that 1+2=3, but more importantly he knows who else knows it, why it is important to them, and how he can use that information to give himself an advantage today and into the future. He has learned that macro is reality, because micro is for nerds in cubicles. He understands micro, but macro is where it's at.
Your better educational outlets TEACH YOU HOW TO BE A CORRELATOR and use it to your advantage.
That's my experience....and I'm a state school guy all the way.
