Brutalist Architecture

Jesus mate, you've almost got me creaming in me kex...Add to your list Rochdale bus station (with the notorious "black box" offices) that comes with the iconic GMT (greater manchester transport ) sign rendered in orange plastic - Does it get any better?

Also St Mary's estate, Oldham - Sadly now mostly demolished & few if any pics on the net. What you'll tend to find (with a couple of exceptions) is that on those kind of estates, there was fuck all wrong with the flats, all the problems stemmed from the circumstamses of the people living in them.

Anyway, apart from the corrugated aluminium "big shed" warehouse, brutalism is the only architectural school unique to the 20th century and as such should be celebrated.

i think you would appreciate a trip down to pompey mr wheel trim!i like tower blocks for some reason, yet dont like brutalist buildings used for commercial purposes. alot of design goes in and out of fashion but i dont think we will see a le corbusier revival for quite a while!

We won't, and yet those buildings were concieved with high ideals, the like of which we're unlikely to see again.

-- Thu Apr 07, 2011 8:51 pm --

ICI building in Blackley is part of my childhood, so I concede I may be biased... But how can anyone think the Rochdale black box is anything other than beautiful?

I quite like the look of the toast rack near Fallowfield on the campus
Wash your mouth out, heathen!!!
The toastrack, aka Hollings Faculty, is one of Manchester's iconic buildings and certainly not from the Brutalist school.
Kudos to pinky for an architectute thread. I was scrolling down, amazed and not a little outraged that he hadn't mentioned The Crescents in Hulme, but bless the boy, he saved the best to last.
The Fort Ardwick flats were even uglier, mind, like something from Stalin's USSR.

I kind of agree with the sentiments expressed about the ideals of the architects and the developers, to me they were more innocent times, when society was convinced that new was better and the public had a trust in them.

The ideals may have been right, but unfortunately it tended to be the working class who were the guinea pigs, whilst the designers tended to live in the nice suburbs in splendid isolation.

I think many lessons were learnt from the experiment

Who can name this famous Car Park (Now demolished) it appeared in a film, it had a Cafe on the top that was never opened (built 1969 demolished 2009)

Gateshead municipal centre. Get Carter. I used to work in an office up there and that was my view out of the window.

absolute disgust at people liking this. 60's architecture is vile. I strangely understand a sort of cult following for it but they're eyesores.

Oh an Get Carter It was in Gateshead. Never seen the film but remember reading about it when they demolished it.
