Brutalist Architecture

The Fort Ardwick flats were even uglier, mind, like something from Stalin's USSR.

The fort ardwick flats were built by Bison Concrete along with fort Beswick. The building techniques were poor & those flats were not fit for purpose.

Bison Concrete had a number of disgraces up and down the country, including the Hutchinson E area of the Gorbals in Glasgow, blocks of flats known locally as "the dampies". These flats were prone to damp & condensation, but rather than admit there was a problem, a Glasgow city father insisted tenants must've been breathing too hard.

I never knew they were built by Bison, a shocking company. Based in Burton, a few of my mates have worked for them in the past and they have a Dickensian attitude to their employees. They are also one of the worst corporate murderers in Britain, an outrageous track record for deaths and maimings on site caused by cutting corners. Fucking scum, but they 'donate' money to whoever is in power, which basically buys them a licence to kill working stiffs with impunity

Fucking horrible building.

That design is very reminiscent of Oscar Niemeyer who essentially designed the City of Brasilia.

I think that we have a lot of truly beautiful buildings being built today, and it is inconceivable that we could have gone from neoclassicism to where we are today without brutalist architecture.

For that reason alone it has been of immeasurable benefit to humanity, ugly or not.

Two of my "favourites"...

Anyone familiar with Brum city centre will recognise this monstrosity...

And anyone familiar with Runcorn will recognise this monstrosity...

No wonder old Charlie-boy labelled buildings like these "carbunkles".
