Budget Hotels

Anywhere in popular city centres such as York or Manchester are pricey especially at the weekends when concerts / sports events / stag and hen do’s are taking place. Premier Inns and Travelodges get cheaper the further out of the city you go but there’s nowt cheap in the city centres even if you book well in advance.

It's all about demand I had a fall out with the Mrs and intended to book into the travelodge next to Strangeways prison for a week. £22.50 Monday to Wednesday some Fecker was on at the arena Thursday so the price was £189. Friday was £109 Saturday £149 and Sunday had eased off again to £49. I stayed Monday to Wednesday and then went home with my tail between my legs. I had to at those prices.

Trying to book a hotel for myself and two kids (one 18 and one 12) in York next weekend.
How much are people paying for something budget atm?

Some of the prices are daft (and only get less so when you're looking at B&B's 20 miles out).

The cheapest I've found is a Premier Inn 1.5 miles out for £141 - does that seem about right (or have I left the booking too late)?
We are in York next Sunday and Monday. Premier Inn cost £60 a night. But it was booked a while back.

I looked on Hotel.com and saw a family room for £93 about four miles from York city centre
if you’re prepared to go a bit further, Days in at Wetherby was about £65
Think I've just seen that - in Selby (never been but at hotel looks nice).
A good £50 cheaper but we'd have to factor in taxis (and also dropping bags off and going back into York).
Not an issue for me but not sure the kids would appreciate.

I've booked the prom inn for £141 -it's my birthday weekend with the kids so looking forward.
Been a while since I've been to York but it's lovely city.

You've done the right thing.

Premier Inns are the best of the "budget" hotel chains.

I'd say,

Premier Inn > Travelodge >> Days Inn

Plus, esp when boozing, proximity is King!

Yeah, they are comfy places....just sometime paying a fair bit for 'budget' (but have you visited some easy hotels?!).

Probably end up with just me and my lad.
Def up for the Jorvic centre again (last time he went he freaked....but I think he was three back then).
The Minster....a general schlep and a wander to find food/drink.
Anything else worth a visit in York (without going on too much of an adventure The place itself is like a museum to the past, mostly)?

I remember a few 'proper' coffee shops in York (one in the bridge which was ace).

Prices of everywhere have gone up a lot this last few months, funnily enough!

Premier Inn beds are about as good as it gets although Travelodge's are very good too.

Might've done an Easy hotel but can't quite remember whether the one in Glasgow was that or an Ibis budget...?

They're ok and quite funky as all fairly new, but small rooms and only have shower cubicles and bog you have to back in to, rather than a bathroom, but that's fine for a night. Beds are smaller and less comfy but ok to collapse in and not much more. The one in Glasgow was full of people on nights out, so quite lively!

Not been to York for ages so can't help there.

Have a great weekend. It's my birthday too but I'm working Fri and Sat in Liverpool so will stay at home for a change and go out Sat night.

The museum with the indoor victorian street is really excellent and my kids love it.

Ahh - happy birthday for the weekend mate.

Ooh - good shout.
Will pencil that in over the weekend definitely.
Thanks!

Yeah, my youngest is 12 but this museum sounds like he’ll enjoy it.
Thanks!
My youngest is nearly 17 but she's enjoyed going since she was about 10. We only live half an hour or so away so go quite a few times per year. It's a great little city for sightseeing. Lots of interesting stuff to see and do.

Will book this for sure (we’re over on Saturday & Sunday so plenty of time).

I’ll advance book too.

Remember the first time I went to York & the snow had started in Manchester.
By the time we arrived in York it was about a foot deep (and lasted over the weekend).
That & the Tudor builds made for a pretty enchanting visit.

Seems about right mate, we stayed in a hotel out by racecourse 2 weeks ago. If anything out that way. Ours was little more, had spa etc as was my partner's birthday. Good travel links into city. We had bus stop right outside. Bus every 10-15 mins and took about 10-15 mins. Can use contactless on bus so no need to worry about tickets. Can walk the walls, museum, Viking museum, river boat trip, Clifford's Tower, Minster, we did an indoor crazy golf thing which was good laugh, railway museum.
