BUF flags out and Britain Firsts antics

The extreme right will always be with us. They just tend to implode and change their label every ten years or so. A resurgent BUF will go exactly the same, way as the NF, BNP, EDL, UKIP before them. It will dissolve into infighting then pop up as something else wrapped in a flag. Certainly we should be aware of them and even keep an eye on them, but not necessarily worry too much about their latest version of stupid.

Fascism generally doesn't get elected, it creeps into a nations consciousness and as groups like the DFLA, BUF, become more acceptable, they pull the politicians of the day rightwards, its happening now, it has happened with UKIP and over the last 20 years a country likes ours with a proud tradition of welcoming refugees now has a refugee Home secretary deploying the Royal Navy to stop dinghies. That can only be done because of the creep of fascism moving the norms ever rightwards. We have Johnson thinking of getting rid of the electoral commission, we have the Judiciary challenged and accused of being political, all these small attacks add to a bigger picture. The country is veering towards an extreme right wing state that is borderline fascist and before we know it, it will not only be acceptable to be a fascist, it will be the law and anybody opposed to it, well, you know what happens to them.

You may think this is pie in the sky and OTT hyperbolic, but so did Hindenburg.

That's kind of my point. I've not said that I'm not concerned by fascism or the erosion of civil liberties. My point is that no group that identifies as fascist will ever get into power in this country.

On the example you gave, I think you have to strike the right balance between completely pandering to the views of an extreme organisation and completely ignoring the views that a lot of the public share, that might otherwise make them vote for an extreme organisation.

We saw that with the BNP towards the end of Labour's last Government. The Labour party wouldn't even debate the concerns that people had around immigration, asylum, the EU and so on, so we had a swathe of BNP councillors and MEPs elected, and Nick Griffin appearing on Question Time.

What a monumental mistake that was, and I'm glad the party in power are talking about those issues even if, when you cut through all the political bluster, their performance is little better than the Labour Party's.

I'm particularly enjoying this thread of the Sky History channel trying to convince everyone that they haven't accidentally included a competitor with Nazi face tattoos in their new reality TV show.
