@Alex: Congrats, you are already famous before you even have been to a match down there! :)

While I dont have a high opinion of Ingolstadt I still appreciate the fact that you dont just follow one of the "usual suspects".

@Scaring Europe: For whatever reason having fellow Bluemooners attending matches of Frankfurt doesnt turn out any good!

Mr.Aidan has a horrible record as well! At least he could witness one!! win for us in the Euro League, however the match wasnt really important as we were already through to the next round.

Filthy Bluemooners sabotaging my poor club...:(

Anyway...we need to coordinate our groundhopping better to ensure the max possible amount of people from this forum are present!

This should greatly increase the chances of everyone getting horrible drunk as well. :)

Still trying to get my groundhopping trip to England planned for next season...was planning to attend the Palace - City match around easter, but then I had to cancel my plans due to work related issues.

Good Man!

I might pop over with you next season, as it would be a new ground for me. Just Augsburg, Freiburg, Hoffenheim and Paderborn to tick-off from the current list.

Rhineland’s your man for Cologne. I’m still buzzing from the victory over Frankfurt the other week. Tremendous atmosphere, and even better seats.

Sorry Bembeltown, but I’ve seen your boys four times and you’ve never won. However, I thought your support in Cologne was probably the nearest to a fanatical English following from the mid 80s (and that’s supposed to be a compliment). It was good in Monchengladbach last season as well.
With any luck you could probably tick off Ingolstadt, Augsburg and Freiburg in one or two weekends next season. Doubtful Paderborn will stay up, but I'd like, to visit there - looks a strange ground!

Trust me. the really strange one is Union Berlin, who virtually every German fan I’ve met, (although I never asked Rhineland) seems to have adopted, as some kind of team-for-the-working class, after taking the idea of a Supporters Trust to the next level, by building the club a new ground with their own resources.

Absolutely brilliant, until you meet them, and they start telling you ad nauseum, how much they are admired by the fans of other clubs.

Last season, we saw them draw 0-0 with Karlsruher, and by the end of the game, our motley crew of 4 City, 2 Liverpool, 1 Derby County, and 1 Everton (Mark, to me and you Rhineland), were supporting Karlsruher.

For the same reason, I’ve always favoured Hamburg over the self proclaimed People's Club on the Reeperbahn.

St.Pauli are like Astra beer....shit product, but great advertising! ;)

Anyway, offer stands to whoever reads this...if you are in the Frankfurt area and want to get some games in let me know.

Darmstadt, FSV Frankfurt and Offenbach all around the corner as well and I am always up for some footie.

Count me in.

I’ve only ever witnessed two games in Frankfurt, both resulting in goalless draws. Nurnberg in 2013 (when they brought thousands) and last season’s Sunday fixture against Werder Bremen.
After the game, we ended up in the last pub on the right, just before the railway station, enjoying a few “Scoops” with some of your top boys. Apparently, you had taken 10,000 to Bordeaux in the Europa League, and they were asking about directions to Swansea (who if memory serves me correctly, were potential opponents if you won the next round)

We then retired to an Eintracht Ultras pub, about two hundred yards opposite the hauptbahnhof.
A top night, but headaches on the plane the following morning.

I've just finished a book about the Miracle of Berne, and the number of Kaiserslautern players, who were in that team.

At the risk of sounding like a dumb English idiot, are they "K-Town", or does that refer to Karsruher, who are also in the promotion race?

K-Town indeed refers to Kaiserslautern. The reason they came up with that name is that they have/had a large following of US soldiers who were stationed in the area.

But I am completely fine if you refer to them as I-Town...inbreds *cough, cough*

"Wir scheissen auf Saarbrücken, wir pissen in die Saar, wir hassen Kaiserslautern, Tod und Hass dem FCK!"

Ok ok...I take my coat...

Ramstein Air Base is near Kaiserslautern and K-Town (and its surrounding) still is the biggest US-community outside of the US and there is still 50.000 US service members stationed (and a lot of other NATO employees). I was surprised to read that as for me it looked like about everything was drawn out of Germany - but it is just like this in the Rhein-Main-Area and about every other Nato or US area in Germany where they closed everything in the recent years. Just read that Rheindahlen (british) was closed 2 years ago, too. Seems like K-Town is the only thing that survived...

Stef - you make it sound as though I'm an unlucky charm. Frankfurt have won every time I've seen them play apart from when they play against Hoffenheim :)

I had hoped to fit in another trip before the end of the season to tick off another few grounds, but it's looking doubtful now - the fixtures didn't fall how I wanted them to.

I'm on 12 out of the 18, but I think I'll lose at least one of the grounds I've been to, and at least two more new grounds for me to visit coming up.

Anyway I should be able to get to Augsburg and Ingolstadt next season when we end up playing Bayern in the group stage.

Rhineland, I'm determined to get to a Köln game so I'll be in touch when I get round to it.

Yup...10000 in Bordeaux, if you never win anything of relevance you got to take the opportunity and celebrate stuff like reaching the EL group stages.

Aidan,

This sounds a lot more positive, but somehow I have the impression that you are still on a horrible record! ;)

Anyway,

Best of luck against the Hammers!

I'm hopefully getting to an Ingolstadt game in August, so I'll try and tick off maybe Augsburg or maybe someone else. Might even do a few of the 2. Liga grounds - Nürnberg or Fürth if they stay up, could even do 1860.

Nurnberg is an interesting octagonal stadium, located next to the Nazi parade grounds, that you see on the old newsreels.I was there on the same day that Anelka scored the winner at Anfield in 2003

They are also the only Bundesliga Champions, to be relegated the following season.
Now who could be so complacent, to do something as stupid as that?

Nürnberg also managed to be relegated as a cupholder in 2008. I think Kickers Offenbach did that before, so they were not the only ones.

There's a phrase "Der Glubb is a Depp!". Glubb is the Nickname of 1.FC Nürnberg and Depp is an idiot.

When City were the relegated Champions, in 1938, we were also the top scorers.

Is the Thomas Tuchel to Dortmond a done deal? As a Newcastle friend of mine is convinced he's going to be their manager next season and the only reason they haven't announced it is because mainz won't allow him to talk to anyone until July when he is officially released from his contact.

I visited Nürnberg in December 2013. It was the coldest I've ever been at a football game, but it was a good atmosphere. Its an unusual ground being Octagonal, and I felt quite far away from the pitch, but it felt like it had a soul to it if you know what I mean. I thought it was quite a nice city too, and there is plenty to do, particularly if you're a history buff (I'm not but found it interesting anyway).

They have my favourite club motto in the world - 'Ich bereue diese Liebe nicht'. Which I think translates to 'I do not regret this love'. I love the sense of defiance - its as if they know its a bad idea, but in the end its worth it some how.

Oh lord....do I read some sympathy towards Nürnberg between your lines!? Hold on! Let me send you another batch of Frankfurt scarves over!! Its not to late to save your soul! ;)

"Ich bereue diese Liebe nicht" (translation is fine btw) is really a great motto and it expresses everything there is to express about supporting a club without success.

I remember when Nürnberg went down last year (or was it already two years ago?) they were playing Schalke on the last match day and their relegation was pretty much sealed. They had a huge banner with them which read "Sometimes you can´t help but hate, what you want to love so much". Pretty much summarized everything as well....

You are right about Nürnbergs ground having a soul! Its just nice to see a ground which has not the standard arena layout these days, even though it is a bit shitty that you are pretty far away from the action due to the running track.

2006 brought us a lot of nice new grounds, but I am not a big fan of those new arenas. You can hardly notice a difference between e.g. Hamburg and Frankfurt.

Back in the day every ground was somehow unique in a special way and I am missing this character to certain grounds (including our own).

Would be interesting to see what people consider their favourite ground in the Bundesliga? I am personally a big fan of Kaiserslautern´s ground as it is very English and compact in a way.
Its in the middle of the town, you have to climb up a hill (the dreaded Betzenberg) and the "friendly" inhabitants of this wonderful place pelt you with potatoes. :)

I really like Cologne as well, again because it is a compact ground with a great atmosphere. If it wasn't for the dreaded music they play....

That's obviously going to be the Audi Sportpark next season! ;)

It's a generic ground, but anything is better than the ESV Stadion!

Hi,

New to this thread! I am off to Dusseldorf on my Stag do on Friday Morning & we have managed to get tickets for 10 of us to go & watch FC.Kolne against Bayer Leverkusan on Saturday afternoon. Have done Schalke & Hambug with City & went to a St Pauli game game when i was back in Hamburg a few years ago, though finished 0-0 so hoping for some goals.

Tickets were decent price, 34 Euros each, on my statement worked out just over £26 each, back behind the goal i think.

Really looking forward to it, anyone got any tips on best place to have a drink etc... Anything we should be aware of (I'm interested in this music they play?!) etc...

Cheers

I think you will be in for a great weekend! :)

We currently have some pretty nice weather over here and I think its supposed to stay sunny and warm over the weekend as well.

In terms of drinking you cant go wrong in the Old Town of Cologne and Düsseldorf, lots of bars/pubs around...Just need to remember that you drink Altbier in Düsseldorf and Kölsch in Cologne.

Don't be a fool and order a Kölsch in Düsseldorf or vice versa! ;)

Leverkusen against Cologne is considered a derby even though the "real" derby is Cologne vs. Düsseldorf/Gladbach, but I am pretty sure it will get tasty anyway. Make sure to visit the museum in Cologne´s ground pre match...

And the music thingy...well its a matter of taste but Cologne is the epicenter of carnival in Germany and they love to sing their carnival songs in the local dialect (even if you understand German you wont understand anything when they start with the dialect thingy).

Got a soft spot for Cologne myself as my brother in law is a Cologne supporter since birth.

Hope you enjoy the weekend!

Cologne is the only city in germany, where bands make a living by making and performing songs that tell the people how great the city is and how wonderful the people are. I mean, a lot of german cities have some sort of hymn, but Cologne produces dozens of it each year (for their carnival parties). There is no other city in germany that is that kind of self-loving. If you like Cologne, you love it, otherwise you hate it.
