well, if anyone even remembers a Bundesliga club named Uerdingen 05, they have been relegated to League 5, division north rhine, today.

I've been through Uerdingen on a train, but didn't know they had a football team.

That's a decent stadium (On Soccerway), so presumably, like Essen, there's a large potential fanbase.

How far did Fortuna Dusseldorf slip before they turned it round?

they had their days as Bayer 05 Uerdingen. Won the german cup in 1985 and went to semis of the european cup the following year, losing to Atletico. And they had a UEFA Cup campaign that ended in the round of last 16 vs Barcelona

Fortuna Düsseldorf was down to League 4 in 2004 ( i think sponsored by a Punk band by the time)

i´ve written above about them?
You have, spent many a great day there in the 80's whilst living in Germany, was there for their most famous win in europe, and still follow them every week. Have a good friend who goes home and away, and his English team are City.

Sad day for him, we speak nearly every game, and spoke most of the game today on whatsapp. With 10 minutes to go, an Uerdingen goal, and a Weidenbruck goal, and we would have stayed up, sadly it went the other way, how it happened when they were top 5 just before christmas, well see Newcastle.

well, League 5 is very low for a former Bundesliga club. Only those that went to the wall and had to restart at the bottom of the pyramid are playing lower.

I'm probably going to regret asking this........................oh go on then.

Is there a footballing reason why you dislike Hamburg or is it just pure spite?

Spite. :)

I had a German exchange student in my class in school who's a Hamburg supporter. We're good mates, but he took the piss taking way too far after that UEFA cup tie when I was absolutely gutted. Let's just say I've been handing it back with interest and if they get relegated I'm going to absolutely put the boot in on the ****. That and I'm still pissed off about the UEFA cup, petty I know, but...

Fair enough mate.

I've never forgiven Newcastle for putting a brick through my windscreen, when we beat them in the League Cup around December 94.
As much as I dislike Hull and Steve Bruce.............

but how the story of both clubs went different ways since then

Yep. It's been an education for the lad about not being a bad winner. Teach him to act like a rag.

The funny thing is that I once joined the Hamburg supporters club and even went to some of their european games, never realising for one moment that one day I would be on the other side of the segregation barrier.

They were lower, and have been to the wall of course. They should have been relegated last year, but got a reprieve. This year though they were close to the top at the season break in December, but have just collapsed worse than Newcastle here, after a number of players moved on in the transfer window.

Me and my wife followed them home and away when we lived there in the 80's, getting back to City games was difficult (no cheap airlines), even finding out the City result on a Saturday wasn't east, when we were in the second level here, so Uerdingen was my football fix, and I've never lost touch with them, even after 3 seasons at level six.

One day I hope to see them again in the Bundesliga, a shame that Grotenburg has only 1500-2500 people every week, when it can hold 30,000 people, but good that so many still support the club at this level, 2950 there today, but I expect Fortuna brought a good following.

Just been in a bar in Zandvoort watching it all unfold, sat with S04,BVB,Koln fans...for some reason the Koln fans went ape with joy when Stuttgart scored to stay up.

Re League 3 Play Offs, thought my favs Aaachen were in them?

Mother of God, I forgot all about Aachen.
I was drinking with some of their fans before the Italy-Bulgaria game at Euro 2004. Aachen had just qualified for Europe after reaching the German FA Cup Final and losing to someone who had already qualified.

They kept saying, "We're the same as Millwall" (who had just lost to the Rags) and I kept replying, "You're nothing like Millwall. You're decent football loving enthusiasts, just like me"

Well, it seemed funny at the time.

Amazingly that first game in Europe was my first Aaachen game, played Lille but in Cologne as the ground wasnt up to it at the time.Went on the piss with some of their fans hence why I like them so much.In the shit a bit now though.

for those who want 1860 to stay in Bundesliga 2. It is interesting, if they are relegated they will leave the Allianz Arena and i´m not sure, if this couldn´t be the better way to restart the club.

I do,Ulf K etc, from Krefeld, the Manchester of Germany...textiles and all that.Quite a few people from Krefeld came to Manchester and vice versa in the past exchanging textile expertise I was told.

Remember them being dropped by Bayer in favour of just keeping Leverkusen which seemed to be the start of the end.

Indeed it was.

One of my best ever nights at a football match was in Krefeld, when they knocked Dynamo Dresden out of the Cup Winners Cup, an amazing night.

Saw them against Barca too the following season, lost 2-0 home and away, and the rag Hughes scored in Krefeld :)

They beat Widzew Lodz that season though, so I felt some revenge for that.

They should leave it even if they stay up, get out of the shadow of Bayern, its the way to go.
