German football likes to make out like it’s whiter than white, and is a fan led initiative.
In reality it is dominated by Bayern Munich who’s owners (49%) include a division of the one of the largest car manufactures in the world, one of the worlds largest financial institutions (which actually makes them the richest sports club in the world going by ownership wealth) and the largest sportswear manufacturer in the world. This means that Bayern have in the past been given access to favourable sponsorship deals to grow them into the dominant force that they are where every other German club is effectively a feeder club to them.
Dortmund have links to Russian oil and gas companies, same as Schalke.
Leverkusen are owned by one the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies, they are even named after them.
Wolfsburg are owned by one of the largest car manufacturers in the world.
Stuttgart are owned by 2 of the largest luxury car manicures in the world.
Bremen have a shipping magnate as one of their owners.
The reality is German football and also Netherlands football have more of a history of being created, owned and operated by commercial companies than English football clubs are. But having fans banging drums constantly during the game helps perpetrate the myth that their fans 51% ownership gives them a say in the running of their club, and that they have a healthy league that doesn’t suffer from the commercialisation of other football clubs.
