Burnley (H) | Post-Match Thread

I may be getting greedy but I don’t think we are as good as we were a few seasons back. Lack of pace and presence in midfield and of course almost impossible to replace Silva and Aguero. Think we desperately need Haaland to give our team some star quality and a focal point.
I think that’s the problem mate. You can’t replace silva or Sergio. Anything else is a downgrade. We’ve still got an unbelievable squad though so lots to be thankful for

Why would any team with CL ambitions want to sign Sterling?
Because he’s a top player, and he might not be showing it now, with us. I can guarantee though if he does move it will be to a c/l team and a fresh start will see him starring for them, like he has for us before.

I know there are those on BM who will disagree with my take after watching the game today - forget the model of selling the fringe young players, I think we have reached the time when we should sell Raheem, Ake and Mahrez to fund a big all out move for Haaland. Pep gave all three a big chance today and whereas you can't make a call on just an odd game the fact is we are much a better, balanced team with Jesus and Grealish in the wide midfield positions.

Raheem has already allegedly made some noises about demanding extra playing time, well if this was his message to the manager that he should play more he is slightly deluded. I have no doubt it's not about talent but more of a mental thing - same with Mahrez he was excellent late last year and proved so many wrong. Today he was wasteful, selfish and didn't work - we all know these three are decent players but for me, today showed that maybe they would be best served moving on.

Sounds crazy seeing as we won the game and didn't concede but being totally honest from where I sat Burnley had 2 or 3 really good chances. It's not me being arrogant that we should batter every team more that we need to play a certain way. Bernardo, Rodri and Phil set the standard again today and them working twice as hard as others is not something that is sustainable all year.

As for Ake all our sub standard performances seem to come when he is in the starting lineup. He did ok but to me kills a lot of our momentum.

Anyway before the Riyad posse have a go - we won and that is the big thing. I just thought that the three players who needed to play well were the ones who played the worst. Opinions, opinions hey.

A lot of poor performances
Is Phil getting a free ride?
And thought keeper was a tad ropey
The amount of leeway you get depends very much on recent form, Sterling was no worse today than Phil. Phil has much more credit in the bank as he hasn’t been stinking the place out this season and most of the last.

You also have to consider age and experience. Sterling needs a run of good to very good games, it’s as simple as that really. It’s hardly knee jerk that stage was a long long time ago.

Burnley made it a bit hard but not that hard. They were miles better when Cornet was on the pitch. I have no idea why he was taken off, by far their most threatening forward. And after he went off we took total control of the game.

We lacked energy at times today but Rodri was class. Stones and Bernardo were excellent n’all.

de Bruyne and Cancelo’s passing was bloody awful today. Everything Cancelo hit was lazy. In a spell of four passes in the second half, he gave three away and stopped us attacking by passing backwards to nobody and Ake had to run after it with the other. Foden Mahrez and Sterling had poor games n’all.

But we won and we played around the same level against Southampton and didn’t win, so all good really.
