That's true, but I was talking about the dangerous tackles. You get one or two every few weeks which could result in a season-ending injury. I think that those - because they should result in red cards - will go to VAR. If a referee misses a challenge which has the entire crowd gasping and After which the opposition team is accusing the tackler of going with studs, VAR will be consulted.

Correct but I'd think that a referee wouldn't rush to deem a tackle like that only worthy of a yellow if he has a chance to consult VAR before making the decision. If he's unsure, he'd ideally want to have another look rather than mess up a match-changing decision.

Then again, maybe you're right. Perhaps I'm overestimating the competence of the referees in England.

Yeah, that was too much. But what I'm trying to describe is a situation where a referee doesn't see a tackle but sees rancor from everyone that leads him to conclude that a red worthy tackle may have taken place. (Think of Kane or Ali in the home match against Tottenham last December.)

Under the current rules, there's no way he send a player off without having seen the tackle, if his assistants haven't had a clear look at it. With VAR, it gives them an option to consult, which saves them from embarassing themsleves by messing up a decision that big.

I'm not sure referees are ever as biased as fans (of all teams) tend to think they are. I think that if given this tool to help them in their decision-making, we'll see a reduced amount of these horrible tackles because players themlsves will know that they're less likely to get away with it

If Bernardo isn't fit, as suggested, then I'd start Foden in his place, with a view to getting De Bruyne half an hour at the end. Not a fan of starting players who've been out for a long time, much rather see them eased back in.

The stars (*) are for subs that I would bring on. I’d rest Raheem, but give him 20 minutes to get in a shift in advance of the CL game, just as I’d give 60 mins to David Silva and then give him a rest. I’d “manage” all the players with stars to give them less than 60 minutes, but get a good run out and get the cobwebs out after a busy Intl break for some of them.

I was thinking of the 2nd match against Shakthar a few days ago and since you've expressed that view, here's a question:

Let's assume that we beat Shakthar this week. Do you play a weakened team against them in the 4th matchday and rest everyone for the United match a few days later (risking a bad result which may cost us qualification or first place,, atleast?), or do you focus on getting through the group and trusting that we would have enough to get 3 points even with a 3 day rest?

Play full strength team in both games.

Terrible news re Danilo , has had a shocking run with injuries since he joined us.

Good news re Delph and Gundy that are back to full training.

Our squad depth is what makes us firm favourites to break the sequence of 2 titles on the spin and of course not forgetting we have the best manager by some margin when it comes to 38 game management.

That isn’t how VAR works. VAR are constantly looking at the game and advise the ref to review things they feel needs reviewing - no amount of crowd gasps will make a difference

I've always thought it was used at the discretion of the official on the pitch rather than those looking at the monitors.

Are you sure about that? The reason I am under the impression that it's up the referee is that there have already been complaints in Spain about VAR not being consulted when necessary because certain referees didn't ask for it when a situation was deemed necessary. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have both issued complaints already.

I am 99% sure. VAR advise the ref. That said, if the ref is unsure if something he may be able to ask

Eg - I watched a game in Germany, ball came into the box, was cleared and play carried on as normal. A few seconds later VAR adviser the ref the ball was cleared by a handball. Ref looked at the screen, confirmed and a pen was given
