Bury football club in big financial trouble......

14/02/1998 versus Bury at Maine Road 0-1. This eventually proved to be our relegation season into the 3rd tier for the first time. I watched this from the Main Stand. Don't think I've ever felt lower on hearing the final whistle of a match. And then something happened which made me proud to be a Blue like never before. We used to jokingly call the Main Stand the 'moan stand' on the Kippax, and with good reason. Well, they vented their collective spleen that night, stayed in their hundreds to boo City off, but then stayed to applaud the Bury team off (they'd been celebrating with their own fans at the North Stand end).
That gesture says everything about us, and probably wouldn't happen anywhere else.
I remember the away fixture, must have been September 1997 not long after the season started. We were in a bar in Aiya Napa, loads of Blues in Kappa tops all taking the piss out of each other for watching us play Bury away, though I suppose that said more about Bury's success at the time rather than our demise.
Funny think that's not that long ago, relatively speaking, and then looking at where we are now. Someone said yesterday about how we paid £40k for Morrison. Haha, that's a quarter of some of our players weekly wage now!

Re: Bury FC

I'd like to see both U****d and City make some kind of gesture towards saving Bury. No established Club should be sent under for that kind of sum.

Ask Dale fans if they think Bury should be bailed out.

We or anyone else shouldn't have to help a club who have overspent money they don't have to get to the next level. They are a league two team, if they want to go up a league they should do within their means like Dale.

Hate to say old traditional clubs go to the wall and replaced with the likes of Crawley and Fleetwood but they have to learn a lesson somehow.

Plenty of support for Bury from fans of all clubs. Even Dale. And I would say it would be the same vice versa.
It isn't the fans or the community who have badly run the finances. Most understand that. True that things should have been run more tightly. Recently though they have had 2 statements talking of how things are financially stable. Yet in one year it has become so bad they are days from folding. Yet still no word as to what has happened and why.
They did go up from L2 within their means. It is since they got there that things went wrong.
I agree it isn't up to us to save them. I think the FA have been poor with redistribution of tv cash. But Swales' mis management wasn't our fault and this saga isn't the fault of Bury fans.

Re: Bury FC

It's very sad, but Bury's crowds have been poor for years. I would say they're at the bottom of the level you need to sustain a professional club.

The world has changed, people no longer watch their local clubs as they've got the Premiership (and more) on Sky and ESPN. Bury may or may not survive, but sooner or later quite a few of these smaller clubs will fold. I don't think this is a good thing, but I think it will happen. The money is all at the top and I can't see that altering any time soon.

Am I too naive to think that expensive season tickets and match tickets will eventually persuade people to start looking elsewhere for live football? I know a few Blues who now go to Bury to watch some football properly as they've been priced out of City.

Really? A half decent seat at City is in excess of £40. I'd be staggered if Bury were charging £30. I'm going to Hereford United v Mansfield Town on Tuesday and we're paying £16 for Terrace entry. Next season it's £12 as they've cut prices.

Don't the Rags play reserve games there, maybe they can help them out, but I wouldn't hold my breath
Rag reserves play at Alty and sometimes Salford City Stadium.

Soccer Club United of Manchester play at Gig Lane.

Was thinking more of the price of a season ticket which is 350.
