Recently I've been looking at replacing my old banger with an ex cop car. Pacifically a Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Studio 5dr [DPF] Diesel Estate. Now I've been looking at ex cop cars as i can get something that's 4 or 5 year old for only 3k to 4k. I'm guessing as its an ex cop car they're not going to be death traps and should be reasonably well maintained.

So i was wondering has anyone on here ever bought an ex cop car before. Did it turn out alright or are they a bunch of Lemons that are best avoided ?

Not sure how you have got on because I have only just seen the thread. Take care with the 1.6 diesel ford engine. The oil feeds to the turbo tend to block and the turbo will go. A replacement turbo will normally go soon after install if the oil lines have not been sorted.

As for an ex police car. I got a Skoda fabia estate two years ago with 103,000 miles on it and I have now done over 30K, Changed the tires and just recently had to replace a window regulator.

There was no service history filled in when I got the car off a dealer but I contacted to police force and they e-mailed everything that had every been done, even down to fixing a seat!

Mine was classed as a general utility car so not white with holes in the roof. There was a dent in every panel but that just helps to keep the dicks in clean 4 x 4's out of my way.

buying an ex-cop car could go either way, and just like any vehicle you need to check out each one on its merits - caveat emptor...

a bloke I know who works at a radio station drives an ex-cop car because his father buys them (not that old; US cop car) because he knows they're maintained well & never miss a service; his one runs a mix of petrol & ethanol (which is cheaper than the normal petrol mixes at the pump we have here - regular, plus & super.

i had one years ago it had done 150k miles, the most reliable car i have ever owned,i had it four years and never spent a penny on it, i seen it on someones drive a few months back the thing must have done over 250k by now

Thanks for the replies everyone they really are appreciated. You've all given me plenty to think about before i finally buy something.

-- Sat Mar 29, 2014 3:23 pm --

I'm not certain but i think i've read that in the ford focus the 1.6 diesel is made by Peugeot.

Do you mean that engine or an actual ford diesel engine ?

I think the old ford engine was OK. From what I remember when I was looking later engines had the problem. Check out some reviews and car club sites.
police tend to send their cars to auctions as well. Find out when and where and you can get a bargain.
